he could train you, but school would be much better. most of the companies i applied with wanted schooling from an accredited training school. (PTDI) plus, i don't know that your friend would want to risk his transmission trying to train you. one of the hardest things to learn is how to shift, and you really grind gears while you are learning. that's why most schools don't have the best of equipment to train you on. if your friend uses his truck to make a living, then training someone might destroy his tools. i also have a friend who is an o/o, but he told me that he could not afford to take a chance on tearing up his truck, and i fully understand that. go to school. that will open you up to many different companies, and you won't have to worry about damaging someone's way of feeding their family.

Go to school! It involves more of your time and it cost more; but in the long run, you'll be glad you did. Log on to http://www.infoporium.com/truckschools/ and check http://www.ptdi.org
for schools in your area. Good luck! -
Unless you plan on driving with him like a team. That way he can just do more than show how to drive the truck but could also show you the "ropes" as well.

I started training with an owner/operator who I was going to drive for. I got lots of miles on the road, got to work on a lot of shifting (hills, etc..) but the problem was the backing. If you're hauling gravel, etc... there's not a lot of backing, at least there wasn't for us. I had no training for the skills test so now I am going to start school. I figure the training I got from him has just put me that much farther ahead for school. Now I'm wishing I'd done it a long time ago.
