How long does a driver need to keep logs???
For DOT 8 days.
For your tax records if you claim per diem which you should as it really makes a BIG difference even if you drive for a bottom feeder that "pays" you per diem. The reason is, does that bottom feeder pay you $59 a day? No he's paying some paltry $.09 or $.15 or if you're lucky $.20 a mile! Have your CPA figure your days out against what that company actually ripped you off for and you'll get the full amount of your refund! All these looser companies are doing is stealing from your later years on social security for not paying some taxes on you and they are going to really screw you if you need to apply for unemployment OR Medicaid, and some of them are actually CHARGING you for this "service" ROFLMAO! Do you actually think these companies are going to do something that makes the accounting department work harder and longer hours and give it to you for "free"? HMMM.? Nope. Opt out as you are not really getting "more" money! Or are they charging you $.02 -$05 or more for this service? OH PULEASE!
The 7 year rule is actually a hoax or bad advice! You need to keep your tax records for life! And the IRS CAN audit you after 7 years. I've been there done that and it was 10 years back they went.
I keep mine in an office cardboard storage box in the attic. I've copied all the main tax forms to CD and they are in the lock box at the bank. I'm actually glad they went to loose leaf as they are so much easier to store over those little books! And as I've been using DDL as a backup for logging to catch any mistakes I throw the paper logs away now or the last 7 years or since it came out any way. -

Ok, so what about software generated logs? The plot thickens.
-
-
It's common knowledge by DOT guys and drivers alike why loose leaf logs are used...
-
I don't use loose leaf but if I did it would be for neatness...I hate sloppy logs or mistakes crossed out. -
you need 14 if you run Canada
-
-
you also have to have em on canada legal format...
and 34 restarts have to be 36 hours...
