My FWD REAR axle temp gauge was showing 125F and the REAR REAR gauge shows zilch. Even with the tandems locked, no change.
So when I got home, I metered a few things:
1. Rear Rear axle temp probe shows ~ 330omhs. So I know thats not 'open' and presumably able to do something.
2. 11.8v at the wires and a good ground. So the probe has DC.
Is it prudent to assume a bad dash gauge or how does one tell what to do or check next?

I'm sure you checked already but mine quit working and it had come unplugged behind the dash gauge.
Hanadarko Thanks this. -
Just swap out the wires on two gauges and see if it does same thing. Tell you real quick and won't cost anything .
Hanadarko and CondoCruiser Thank this. -
Thanks guys!
Nah, I havent had the dash apart YET...loose wire...sheesh..that would be my luck.
I was going to try and swap the wires on each gauge next...
Good ideas- -
Would almost bet money one, or both of the wires are unplugged from send unit back of diff.
Push / slide on connections, put back on, GENTLY tighten by crimping with pliers. May have to rig a backstop to prevent them from future unhooking. Send unit is usually protected by rectangular bracket, has holes for small screws; cut piece of plastic mud flap to stop the wires from backing off. Don't know why, front diff wires always come unhooked on my truck, rear wires just stay on. -

Swap gauges. 5 minutes will have your answer

Smart man!
I put my money on the sending units. They are more prone to go out rather than the gauges. -
90f and no shade..instant broil in and around the truck. -
If its a single wire unit the ground the wire out and gauge should go to the top. 2 wire unit then hook the wires together and gauge should go to the top. Gauge does not move then its either a bad gauge or wiring problem. Gauge moves then you have a bad sending unit. I dont remember what the resistance should be on the sending units so no help there
