Well tommorrow is the big day. I leave monday, but the school doesn't start til tuesday. I am just going to study hard, keep my mouth shut, and let them teach me as best they can. I am nervous though, my family's well being is on my shoulder's.

Miles.. Expect around the 1000 to 2000 range.. Don't expect to support your family or yourself for atleast 3 months.. With all the deductions from your load locks, lock kit, any advance you take, tuition.. I would expect your pay will be the best during training.. Then your first 3 months.. But if I may mentiion.. This thread is chocked full of useful information.. And it also suggests that flipping a burger will gain you more money that your first year at central...
Either way.. I would read the thread first, then ask on what's confusing.. Its the same as school.. Don't get pegged as a "question asker".. Just sit back, listen to what the funny short guy and the tall serious one says.. Because THEY will reiterate themselfs multiple times within a few minutes...also.. Just use common sense.. If trucking really is for you.. Also on hometime during training.. Why would you want any? You need 14,5k.. Can't get that being home.. And you sure won't make money going home every week out here.. I go home usually every month and a half to 2 months for 3 days.. I know mike sometimes does 2+ months and boot does about the same.. -
Stay focused. Everything will fall into place. If you have questions, make sure you ask. They get paid to train you.
Good luck and keep posting about your new adventure. I'll turn in my application on Tuesday and will begin class on their next available start date.
Hope to see you in Conley when it's over. -
Thanks for getting back to me. I would think miles at first would be low simply due to my becoming acclimated to the system. It seems those numbers will eventually increase as I gain experience. I'm not planning for my truck to sit still. I'm going to run at a decent pace. If I'm not satisfied with the miles I'm averaging after a year, I suppose I could always look elsewhere. There's an awful lot of freight moving out of the Atlanta area. I just prefer not to job hop.
The question regarding hometime was for comparison. The amount of "Hometime" helps me read the company better. If drivers are home every 2 weeks for a day or two, the company has either too many drivers or not enough freight. Makes me wonder. In this business if your truck is not moving, you don't make money. I don't need to go home to sit around.
And.... flippin burgers........kill me now -
Hometime? They still do that?
I usually do 2-3 months out. When miles get short I just haul guns and untaxed alcohol and cigarettes on my deadheads. As long as you don't tell your DM or get caught it's all good.
The type of miles ya run depends on your reliability and your FM's motivation.
In Rigby ID tonight. It's good to get away from WVDC, although I used my time to get my annual inspection done and some minor work while it wasn't costing me time other than my 34 I was doing anyway. -
How much are they gonna hit me for the load locks and other necessary hardware? -
DonnyH, and Wedge, thanks for the words of encouragement, it really means a lot.
