Curious question for you Cretans

    I've been seeing a subtle change in the stencil on the doors of Crete (and Shaffer) trucks recently. Shaffer's trucks said "Shaffer Trucking, A division of Crete Carrier Corps" for awhile, and Crete trucks just said "Crete Carrier Corps".

    But now...I'm looking at a big red Crete Prostar that's labelled:
    I've also seen an uptick in Cretes tugging Shaffer reefers and vice versa.

    So what's the story? Are they working toward a total blend? Clearly some of the dry siders are pulling reefer to keep moving and some of the chilly willies are under dry stuff to do likewise.

    I would just go ask the driver across the lot, but then I thought, "If some of the folks thinking about working for Crete or Shaffer are dead set on working dry van and never touching reefers (or vice versa) this might be a question worth having an answer to before they make their decision."

    Any thoughts from actual employees are appreciated. I've speculated as well as anybody to this point.

    As far as I can see if a driver is available right there where the freight is, dry or cold, well, hook it and take it... Saves time, miles and helps with Crete's amazing on time record.

    Anyone that's been with Crete longer than i agree with that?

    While it is true the stincle has changed, the company pulling the trailer has not. Most times, even if it is a different colored truck, a Crete driver pulls the van and a Shaffer driver pulls the refer. Only on very rare occassions will the two cross breed.

    I agree with jdrentzjr, you may get a blue truck, you may get a red truck, but you are hired as a Crete(dry van) or shaffer(reefer). You won't pull one of the others very often. I drive for Crete and have only pulled one Shaffer load, and that was just a way to get myself out of Washington state to help out dispatch.

    There were originally five Acklie companies --
    Crete Carrier - the dry van division
    Shafffer Trucking - the East coast reefer fleet
    Sunflower Trucking - the West coast reefer fleet
    HTL Trucking - the O/O fleet
    Easy Trucking - Acklie's daughters' fleet out of Knoxville.

    The daughter sold Easy back to Acklie, and they were absorbed back into Crete. HTL was absorbed into Crete, and all their accounts became Crete accounts.

    Sunflower was merged into Shaffer, and became one big nationwide reefer fleet.

    Somewhere along the way Acklie bought Hunt Transportation out of Omaha, and added flatbed to the dry van and reefer mix.

    Now, there are the three companies - Crete, Shaffer, and Hunt.

    It wouldn't surprise me in the next few years that Shaffer and Hunt lose their autonomy and become divisions of Crete, making one large company (Crete) with three divisions - dry van, reefer, and flatbed.

    I am seriously looking to become a cretan myself. Been looking at both the crete side and shaffer side but im leaning more to the crete side at this moment.:yes2557:
