Good Morning all! I will be on the air Tuesday (tomorrow) at 1:00 PM CDT with Evan Lockridge to discuss truck cab air conditioning system maintenance and repairs. Much of what we will be talking about can be applied to A/C systems in cars and pickups as well. XM171/Sirius147.

    Hey, thats great!

My A/C works for some time (anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours) then start blowing hot air, need to be shut of for 20-30 minutes and eventually start working again.

A/C service done at TA revealed no oil in the compressor and right amount of 134.

My questions is, could this be drier? (never replaced in 700 000 miles) or compressor is shot and overheats?

Sounds to me like the thermostat (which has a probe in the evaporator and will disengage the compressor clutch when it gets too cold) isn't doing its job and is allowing the evaporator to freeze up. When that happens the suction side will go into a vacuum (Hooking up a set of manifold gauges and running the system for awhile should reveal this) and it will draw the oil out of the A/C compressor and then the dryer eventually becomes saturated with the oil.

I would replace the thermostat and then reclaim the refrigerant, add about 5-6 ounces of oil to the compressor, replace the dryer, then evacuate and recharge the system.

You know, it's funny i was just thinking about you (for some reason) a few hrs ago; Did you even figure out your charger's running problem on the top end(near finish line)?

Was it a fuel delivery problem?
