I have never run anything on the eastern seaboard, or the northeast/Atlantic provinces.

I have heard that the east coast is a lot different to run then the west/midwest...

Does anyone have any advice on how to plan for this and any things to watch for?

The load is a Haz Mat Load.

    Thanks

It's 110 miles further to go through Port Huron Mi. Sounds like alot of extra miles BUT if you add up all the tolls, the out of route miles for Haz-Mat and the traffic running the Canadian side makes sense, PLUS once across the bridge you can run Canadian HOS!

This is a surprising comment coming from a student:biggrin_25513:

Just in case you ever become a truck driver you may want to look at trip planning from more then the Gps routing that it will spit out at you!

There are certain cities/highways that you will want to be through at certain times in the days, and certain times that you are better off just sitting in the truck stop.

As I had mentioned I have never run the eastern seaboard, and have heard how crazy that corridor can be, I just want to have a good solid plan in place so if things go well life will be good.

Sorry John I am not following, I posted here since this is a Trucking specific forum.....

Thanks for any help actually answering my question.

Definitely plan where you're going to park for your HOS breaks - if you're running daylight hours, plan on being off the road very early. Parking is extremely limited in the Northeast.

If I were running the trip stateside I'd do this.....

Take I40 to Knoxville, pick up I81 North clear to Scranton PA, take I84 into Mass where you pick up I90 (toll rd). You only need a short stretch here to pick up 290 at Worchester (pronounced wooster) and follow that to 495N. This is the outer bypass for Boston (can get real busy and slow with traffic). Follow 495 to pick up I95N clear through Maine. Short toll sections in NH and southern Maine. Cross into Canada at Houlton Maine/Woodstock New Brunswick.

Pick up Trans Canada (#2) at Woodstock and follow to Truro Nova Scotia (another short toll section over the mountain at Folly Lake. do NOT take the "bypass") Pick up 104 to Cape Breton where you take 105 clear to North Sydney NS. Ferry to Newfie (link I gave you above) to Port aux Basques where #1 will take you clear thru to St Johns.

I'm from "up there" and we ran this route both ways for minimal tolls.

If you choose to run through Ontario/ Quebec; Montreal is the big stumbling block. Aside from the fact that Quebec is French Only (including road signs), Hazmat loads are NOT allowed to run thru the tunnel off the island to join #20. Not kidding, major nono and heavy duty fines. You will need to cross the Champlain bridge (Pont Champlain), which is toll, and catch 20 on the South Shore. Follow 20 clear to Riv de Loup and take 185 into New Brunswick. Pick up #2 TC there and follow as above.

Thats great information guys! I appreciate it!

I have just received my routing from dispatch and they have me crossing into Canada north of Syracuse New York.

I have run to the Port in Montreal a bit so I guess it has relieved a little uncertainty about the trip.

I was mostly concerned with running the eastern seaboard, and the northeast states which I have heard are less then truck friendly.

How long is the boat ride across to the island?

Thanks for the link I will look at it once I have all my routing figured out:biggrin_25514:

Boat ride from North Sydney to Port Aux Basques is 8 hours if all goes well. If the seas come up then time has no limits! Truck drivers automatically get a berth so they can lay down.
