    Y'all:

I know this has been talked to death -- almost, but, if you can tolerate another go-round I'd like to ask those who've done it both ways, "Which is the way to go, company payed or you foot the bill?"

    For example:

#1 Several companies (Schneider is close for me) will train you, and in return you drive for them for a specified time; or,

#2 You could pay for it yourself (@ about $2,500, give or take some) and then shop for a job which will pay you more.

I'd like to hear from people who've done it both ways and have the benefit of experience to say whether they'd do it the same way again.

    Thanks,
    St. Velkro

In my oppion it's better to pay your own way. That way your not a prisoner to a company for a set time. If it does'nt work out for you at that company and you quit or get fired, well they may hunt you down to repay the bill for school, plus any other fee's.

I would say go to a company training
    1. They seem to generally want to train you a little better because they know you will be driving their trucks and be on their insurance.
    2. You really should stay with your first company a min of 1 year, this way you know the trucking industry well enough to make an educated decision where to make your next change too.
    3. Schools seem to be more like a cattle Rance and just try to push you threw.
    4. Schools are know to do some dirty tricks like tell you things that may be accepted to find out later you are not hired, thus you are stuck with a school payment and no job.

:thumbleft: I have no problem with contracts, it's a good way to do business. No problem with the Army, or Army truck drivers either:-D

For all who've given their opinion so far, or will be giving their opinion, please tell me how you did it.

What if it turns out you really hate the company you signed a contract with? If you quit you can bet they will come after you for the money you owe for training. If you pay you're own way you will not be obligated to stay with a company if things are really bad and you decide to find another company.

i paid my own way, and to this day i "pay my own way", that way, i don't owe anyone anything and i can walk away a "free man"...........

try saying that with a signed contract..................

you gotta think about the "consequences" of your actions, and what you HAVE to live up to once you sign on the "dotted line".............

Paying an independent school gives you more options - you can part ways anytime. Signing a contract for a mandatory term of employment with anyone would make me feel trapped.

If you stay or leave before the contracted amount of time, they're (the carrier/trainer) still going to get their money.

I just like the option of bailing at any time with no financial obligation to the former employer.

    Tough call really.

I do remember that when prospective employers came to visit class, we got more than the usual big, dry van carriers. Heavy haul, belly dump, roll-on, roll-off, demolition and construction outfits, container haulers, and even a traveling circus came by to talk. Lots of options - some good, some bad.

I live in Georgia and had my tuition fully paid by the Hope grant, which is fully funded by the "stupid" tax (the lottery). I had to pay a total of $87 out of pocket for the program at the local tech school. :)
