The other day I was thinking about the changes in the physical that the govment has made. Why don't we call on the elected and have them also make the same requirements for everyone. For example the regs now say we need to have BMI done, along with the check for sleep apenea, well why not everyone. Truckers are the only group who have been singled out for this, what about pilots, train engineers, ship crew, general public????
What about having regs say that to renew your license you have to get physical first, along with bmi and checking for systems of sleep apena. If failed then no license!!
We are the only group singled out when there is an accident. OH there was another truck wreck, must have been the driver!! You have heard this over and over through out the years!!
Let's make our voices heard in Washington!!!!

here are some Calculators you can use to figure your BMI and who to lose weight with diet:

    BMI Calculator
    http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/
BMI is not a true measure of health, MY BMI is 29% border line Obese but I am strong as a bull. I don't look right when I get under 220. You know if your muscle mass is throwing this off or not. Brock lesner has an Obese rating but we all know he isn't obese.

    BMR & RMR Calculator
    http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php

This tool tells you how many calories a day you need based on activity. Because I unload my freight and get decent excersise on the weekends I say my level is light active, be honest with yourself if you go from bunk to stool for five days and then on weekends just relax your not light active. I can consume up to 2,831 calories per day without gaining weight. That 2,000 calorie diet you see on labels doesn't fit everyone, it an average that includes children, women, and older people. The more heavy you are the more calories you need to substain the weight, larger people lose weight faster when dieting. It takes 3500 calories to lose a pound meaning you use 3500 more than you take in. Switching that 24 ounces of regular soda to no calorie diet would save you 106,000 calories a year or up to 30lbs in lost weight.

I lost over a 100 lbs in a year peroid. i did it by cutting out soda pops and replacing them with water as well as a little exercise. To be honest with you the biggest thing hurting Truck drivers is food choices on the road. Jared at Subways didn't have meat on his sandwiches. A 12 inch meatball sub has 464 calories on the meat and sauce alone, add the 500 calories from the bread, the 100 from the veggies and toppings, then another 100 from the condiments thats almost 1200 from the sandwich, add in another 300 for a large soda, and another 200 from chips that's 1700 calories...you don't want to know what it is with a cookie.....then pull into another Pilot 8 hours later and order a big Mac Meal 1200 calories regular sized, super size that sucker and your looking at 1500. Just those two meal a day is close to 400 calories than i need to substain weight and I am 6ft1 and 230ish. That doesn't include breakfast or any snacks. I also get a little exercise compared to other drivers it's alot.

You got to buy a fridge and pack healthy stuff. When you must eat something from fast food try a wrap or skip the fries.

Many Pilots have weight restrictions put on them by companies. A helicopter pilot I know has to keep his weight under 230 in order to fly, company rule. The Nurses who fly in the crew have limits of 220 and many of them are men.

Norfolk Southern and other rail companies also have weight limits but don't use BMI. They have been checking for Sleep apnea for years, we are just catching up with them.

I don't think using BMI is a true measure of health and that should be thrown out for it's many flaws. Changes need to be made in the industry for safety reasons but this witch hunt is crazy. The BMI is sexist because women are made to carry more mass in the form of fat around the hips and breast for child rearing. The hypertension is agism.

As for ship crews very few use Americans or fly American flags any longer. Most of the shipping is under the Liberian flag with sailors from the Phillipines as crew. Same in the cruise line industry to. When those ships get 12 miles off the coast they are not in America and fall under International Maritime law. 99% of the time they are 12 miles out and out of jurisdiction.
