Short update today as we got all of the remaining classwork assigned today so we can test out tomorrow. ....

Today I was ut again in the morning. I was told the driving was flawless and would have passed the SQT final testing. As I had "detention" yesterday to practice alley docking, my trainer thought there would be more value spending more time in the yard. I improved vastly over yesterday and was 6 of 6 today, making it 11 of last 11 with NO PROBLEM. IT is required to Get Out And Look for testing, but quite frankly I could have gotten all 6 in there without doing so. I just am becoming more comfortable with the process and corrections without thinking, which puts me in good set ups and position every time before it is a problem. Did all of my pre trips, post trips, in routes, coupling, un coupling with no trouble. The one side note to the morning session was that we lost another student. We are down to just five of the original 13 people. The driver that left today, as the truth came out went to a CDL school that ONLY trained (and subsequently tested) In AUTOMATICS!, Are you serious? I can not believe that is even possible or legal. They made that student drive bobtail the last two days , and I think they just figured there was not enough time in the week to fix or teach what was needed, and so they didnt see a reason on keeping them.

In the afternoon, we did some safety videos. The first over specifically railroad crossings. The second more general about safe driving and work actions. We also had a session / video on the new qualcomm system that will be fully integrated next week. Since I am not sold on or used to the old / standard system, is seems brilliant by comparison. We ended the day taking turns on the driving simulator. I did fine with most of the things they threw at me, but died in the black ice. Note to self, do NOT drive on the black ice!

Tomorrow I will be able to "attempt" to test out of the driving road, skills test, coupling/ uncoupling, pre trip, post trip, etc. We will at some point have a final written test. I am not sure of the processes and workload after that, but you can bet I will be here tomorrow to let you all know.

Your class schedule is beginning to differ from ours in Charlotte. Sounds like you're getting a lot of Yard time where I've been doing a lot of city driving. We did the Simulator today, which was really cool. Our final classroom test is scheduled for Friday.

Sounds like both of you will be driving your very own pumpkin soon! Don't sweat the finals, you're not expected to be perfect, but it is nice if you are. Just settle your selves down, and do what you've been doing. So far, so good, right? Then why wouldn't you be able to do the same testing out?
Good luck guys, wish I was out there with ya!!:biggrin_25525:

What I hate the most about you 2 guys is that you're both a week ahead of me. Man, I can not wait til Saturday to get started. I hope I will be as successful as it sounds like both of you are. Keep up the good work and I don't really hate you, just kidding.

Heading out to Carlisle, PA on the 27th for the start of orientation the following day. Like you guys I am new to the OTR experience as well. But I have been driving propane bobtails for the last two years. Definately looking forward to keeping up with you guys on here.

Dasco, let me know how things are going or you while there and any possible heads up on instructors to go to and run away from.

I have a post up under questions from newbies about SNI as to what some of their policies or tricks of the company so as to stay in their "good graces" anything that I come across I'll pass onto you all.

PC, Raider, just how tight are they on their BP's during the physical? Do they give you a point or two grace or is there no exceptions to the BP numbers. I'm a larger guy but by no means that god awful out of shape.

Best of luck to you as you finish up orientation... PC, you find having your lapop at school a must have for doing homework back at your room?

NewJackfromNY, you didn't say which OC (Operating Center) you were receiving your training at, but if it's like Charlotte there are about 3-4 workstations available for all SNI drivers who want to do CBT (computer based training) lessons or check other SNI stuff. For students, they have a bunch of laptops set up in a conference room, but I don't think it's accessible after class hours, so use the public ones. Several of the students from my class will stay after to work on their CBT's and maybe have dinner at the OC too. The cafeteria is pretty good. When they're done they just call the hotel shuttle to come pick them up.

Now, if you have a laptop and the hotel has WiFi or you have one of those AirCards with a cellular company then I would take it with you. This will allow you to work on CBT's from the comfort of your room. You will be given some time to work on CBT's during class hours, but you won't get many done during those times. It's really easy to knock them out, but there's a couple where the narrator is some British guy that talks so slow it's painful.

As for what to do to stay in the instructor's good graces, it could easily be summed up by saying: don't be late for class, pay attention, and do your homework. If you get paired up with a road instructor that you just don't click with (that was my issue), speak up and get reassigned. I believe RoadRaid3r mentioned that there are some in his class that are on their 3rd road instructor. Good Luck!

Unfortunately the BP issue is black and white. The formula is simple...(220-age) x .9...Whatever that equals is what your max rate can be. If you exceed it, then you go home. If you have not, watch the video on the PWS on the website...What I did was simulate all of the exercises and was able to do them daily for about 2 weeks before I showed up for orientation. I also upgraded most of the exercises by 50%-100%. FOr example, you have to step up and down a 12" step for 60 seconds. I did it for 2 minutes two times with a minute break in between. For weight things, I used 30lbs for 20 lbs, 50lbs for 40 lbs, and 80 lbs for 60 lbs., etc. I also started walking a couple miles a day, and cut out ALL caffeine. I still have been walking a little more than 2 miles a day walking to and from the OC each day. Hope this helps. Also follow the blog from PCDoctor, as he has very good and different information and perspectives than me!

That is the DOT requirement (actually you can be higher I believe and get a temporary medical card). However SNI and others ( I know Roehl for sure), make you do this additional Pre Work Screening with a 3rd party testing company. They do measure your Blood Pressure. I mispoke earlier. What quite a few people fail is that their HEART RATE are too high for the minimal amount of physical exertion required. You HEART RATE can NOT exceed (220-age) x .9. However, even with a recent physical that SNI would have paid for, if your BP is too high on this day, they will send you home as well.

** I will not fix my original post as I addressed my typo in this post regarding BP/ Heart Rate***

I registered 140/104 on their home user grade BP machine. I told the tester it was wrong and that I was 130/77 before coming to Orientation. He offered to do it manually for my own "peace of mind", but I told him I knew what my BP was and his machine was wrong. I did great on the agility test and wasn't sent home because of the high BP. The others in my class complained about the high reading too and complained so I have a feeling the Testers checked their own BP and ended up taking it back to Wally World for another one. Those units are for home use and not the frequency and accuracy they're using them for.
