    Hi to all:

I'm an Okie I suppose, was born in Missouri, so yeah ya gotta "show me!"
10 yrs active military... should have stayed!
Over educated - under employed dad to 2 teenage daughters - (don't clean my gun in front of the boy friends.... just sharpen my knife and let em know I have a cure for over active BB's!)
I have an opinion about everything but sometimes find it best to just keep it to myself!

Since I'm now over 55, I suppose that makes me an over-the-hill (experienced but NOT finished) Laid-off fellow who has looked at the trucking industry on a few occasions.

It's getting tough out here for guys my age, and regardless of all the bad things I keep hearing (even here), I can't help but notice the number of want adds for drivers with a CDL. That must surely mean something.

Not teasing myself (I don't think), expect long hours and some frustration but am about convinced to give it a try. Surely it beats unemployment??

Looked at the lists of Companies to stay away from and those some say they liked. Many companies are on both lists!!! Thats somewhat confusing. But also supports my belief you get out according to what you put in... at least the majority of the time. We all hope!!

Hard, at this point to know what's solid advise and what's hot air.. any suggestions? Other than the reliable "read before you sign"!

    Welcome!!

I'm not in the seat as of yet. Still in Iraq for 2 more years. (Currently Contracting, working on my 4th year) Home Time?? What's that?!?

I have been doing a lot of reading and from what I have put together Us Military types would probably fit right in with minimal complaints.

Most of the complaints I read about we lived with as an Enlisted making about $700-800 every 2 weeks. Probably even less when you were in.

Hurry Up and Wait and NO you can't go home either!!!

Only 1 leggit concern I have seen and is companies that send you out with a load and then let you set for several days before they get you something else.

That tells me they either have to many drivers for the loads they have OR they have poor planning of the loads they have. Either way bad for you as well as the Company.

With 2 teenage Daughters Though??? That's the Biggest reason Mom says I have 2 more years in the Desert before I have to come home. My son will be a Teen then and she knows she will need help cause I got 2 daughters right behind him. 1 yr between each.

Even Truckin' will give me more home time than this BY far. Granted it won't pay near as well BUT neither will doing what I do now when I come back home.

Good to hear someone else considering driving in spite of the many complaints and drawbacks.. like home time. I think you are dead on with the fit from military and trucking. Yes, I'd prefer to be home every night, and so far my wife prefers that too! BUT, not so sure how long I'd last saying "Welcome to Walmart", or "Would you like fries with that" let alone the part time low pay! Looking more and more like I'll have to go - too far for a daily commute to find decent employment, so will be gone either way. Hopefully, being able to get those Prom Dresses etc., may salve over some of the being gone.

Guess it's time for me to shift this to the newbie section, still looking for a decent deal for/after taking on the CDL school. Stay in touch, and be careful over there!!

Just make d### sure you have some Daddy time with them when your home. Talk to them about them.

I spoil the crap out of mine when I am at home!!

But I also treat them as MiniMe's. I explain to them why I am gone and how it benefits them and benefits us as a family and benefits the Soldiers I support.

Kids understand more than we as adults realize. I'm not so far away from being a kid that I have forgotten about being a kid.

My wife always says she has 4 kids at the house. 3 little ones and 1 Big one!!
