Cummins ISX Exhaust Leak

I have fumes coming inside my cab and i think its coming from the turbo area. When the the truck is running i hear a 'rushing air' sound coming from the turbo and i dont know if this is normal. Ive replaced the flexpipe and tightened screws for a part belonging to what im told is connected to the EGR.

Now when i haul a heavy load uphill, especially towards the end of a long day and when i shut the truck off i get a sulfur like smell. It doesnt give me headaches much, but i feel a congested feeling in my chest like stuff is getting into my lungs.

Any ideas?

I'm really surprised there isnt much talk on here regarding exhaust leaks, cause at least 2 a year i get them, regardless of the truck im driving.

 

Travelinman, any loss of power in your truck?

 

No i dont notice a loss of power. I even get pretty good gas mileage. When i pull the hills especially towards the end of a long day i mild 'puff' of exhaust and i usually respond by closing the vents which usually takes care of the problem, but not always. Some days are fine, then the next day i get it.

Im taking it back to the Volvo dealer i bought it from and let them haggle with it. Hopefully they will find something.

I notice around the exhaust system that feeds into the turbo from the engine is a bit rusty and old looking compared to the other engine parts. Dont know if theres a gasket or something loose there.

 

Does anyone have an idea about this issue?

The first 200 to 300 miles i drive, there are no fumes, but somewhere around that mileage i start to get what i would describe as dusty soot coming inside the cab. It doesnt so much give me headaches, but i smell it and feel it in my throat and chest.

It would seem like theres a buildup of exhaust somewhere in the engine, and when i reach around 250miles for the day, it starts to release into the cab. Could the EGR have anything to do with this?

 

What kind of truck?

 

Its a Volvo 670. I took it to the volvo dealer and they seem confident they'll find it. I hear they can pressurize the system and see where the leak is coming from. I sure hope they find it.

 

If the egr valve or pipes are leaking they will leave a big black carbon trail all over the surrounding area.

 

Traveliman, the puff you describe might be turbo actuator problem. Lately I am experiencing the same thing. Heavyd is right. If there was a leak there would be carbon residue present on leaking parts. Sometimes when parked there is a chance you smell fumes from the breather from hot engine. But there is smaller chance to smell them while driving. If you smelled sulfuric acid that would be the time to think about new batteries.

 

HeavyD, theres not large amount of carbon anywhere that i can see in the engine. I wish there was, cause the diagnosis would be so much easier.

Its in the shop now, so I'm hoping for good results. One thing the mechanic asked me was if i hear a bird like sound when i'm driving, to which i answered yes. Kinda like a 'swishing air' sound actually. They said they could hook the truck up and 'presurize' the system to find the problem. I dont know what that all entails....
