Hi, been reading these forums for awhile trying to get some good ideas as of where to start. I got my CDL 2 weeks ago. I have been dreading looking for an OTR job because of having to start at one of the newbie companies. I had applied to Crete, SNI, Swift, and a few others, but was lucky enough to land a great paying local job through my uncle. On the 23rd of August I will be starting at Basic Energy Services driving a cementing truck! I am really excited/nervous. I told the yard boss I didn't really have any experience driving other than in my CDL class, he seemed cool with it said he'd have someone ride with me for a couple weeks before he expected too much out of me. The work will be hard and, I'll have to be on call, but the benefits are great... retirement, company paid insurance, weekly safety bonuses etc. I really don't know why he chose me, looked like he had a stack of apps, but it wasn't much of an interview either we bullshitted a bit, he told me to get some good steel toed boots and he'd have my MVR pulled and call me for a drug test tomorrow, but I am glad he did. It's gotta beat working for a newbie company from what I've heard.
Just a little background, I have been a paramedic for 10 years. I liked it well enough, but man let me tell you, the last service really ruined it for me. No one cared about anyone it seemed, no one but your partner had your back, and the bosses...ugggh. Wanna talk about desk jockies! I decided after working there screw it I need to do something else, so here I am.
I will keep up a post somewhere on my experience at Basic. I look forward to hearing from you all, will take any advise you wanna throw my way, and would be especially interested hearing from anyone who has/is working for Basic or has/is doing this kind of work...not real sure what to expect!
Thanks,
BHMitchell

BH, take a look around, there are lots of threads on getting started in the industry. It looks as if you've done your homework, just watch the companies that are the bottom feeders and you'll be fine. Keep us posted.
BHMitchell Thanks this. -
Ok, so I been looking around a lot tons of info but not a lot it seems on driving in the oilfield. Great site though, I started a blog to try and chronicle my new experience if anyone is interested.
