ok i am 23 and have been driving a truck since i could press the clutch i have pulled hundreds of thousands of bushels of grain, hauled combines (13'6" wide), tractors, and pulled a reefer all over the southeast since i was 16. no telling how many miles iv put in but my dad bought a new pete in 08 and when we sold it a few weeks ago it had 164,000 miles put on it solely by me....our business has tanked so im now getting my cdl this week and will be looking for a job....keep in mind all the driving iv ever done is on mississippi F plates with class r liscences so im not sure i can use this for driving exp???....i would like to drive long preferably coast to coast and would be willing to stay out for months at a time as there is really nothing at home for me anymore....i have put in many a mile under a detach neck pulling oversize and hopper bottom...also pulled reefer quite a bit....any suggestions????
any chance??????????

It's gonna be tough, most company's are going to consider you as no experiance and no real schooling. Just keep trying sooner or later some one will bite BUT DON'T SIGN A LENGTH OF WORK CONTRACT!!

I agree. With my recent experience in applying to fedex, none of that will count toward experience. But they will still ask you to list in detail all teh vehicles you drove and how much. If you have a clean driving record with all that experience(they WILL check), they may just consider you a low risk newb. Who knows.

if you can provide some sort of documented proof you drove. maybe your dad had company letterhead paper he used to mail or hand deliver to customers.? maybe that since you say your dad's company "tanked" there must be something there you can still use as proof. you got nothing to lose by knocking on a few (or many) doors. heck, maybe an old customer knows someone who needs a driver. go around and check those out as well.
good luck to you, and please let us know how you are making out. -
Hey Squarebox, give Wiley Sanders a call, I think you would have a very good chance of being hired. 800-633-1510

thanks so much for your help guys....i guess it just irks me that noone wants a driver that really knows what he is doing....and there is no chance of talking to someone with a heartbeat and enough authority to go with it to help me out....i du nno

There maybe some mom and pop companies or even an owner operator willing to take you on. However the insurance companies are the ones setting the standards as far as going to trucking schools vs. grandfathered in.

guess it wasn a great idea to get my cdl on my own.....seems most companies want to put someone through school rather than hire someone with a cdl bu with no "experience".......i would venture to say i have 1000% more experience than these guys in these driving schools.....but obviously that matters to none but myself...i could get a regional job around here in a heartbeat but i would much rather pound the pavement and run cali turnarounds or somethin lik that...just much more my style....i have a 48'stepdeck and a reefer sittin up but the truck is gone...i guess i could go buy a truck and hit the road but i just dunno...also have a hopper so i wouldn have alot of capital investments as far as trailers go....thanks for your help chompi...
