what would be the news old truck to get that doesn't have all the ele. stuff on it? that would be the easy to work on and cheap and what motor and trans setup. thanks just asking

B model Cats went into about 1995... Cummins had the NTC's about that long, too. Detroit Series 60 has been around since the late 80's.
Don't be afraid of pre-2001 emission engines... they are pretty simple.... no EGR problems. -
pre emmisions are the last good engines they are cat cummins they are about the same to work on ..You just have to find what your wanting 2001 and older just have to see what kind of miles they have on them most will be million plus and when and if it has been overhauled if it has GET THE PAPERWORK to show that it have been majored ..I wish you the best .....

I agree with most here... the pre-emission engines are the ones to look for and not pre electronic. All of the major brands had darn good engines up till emissions kicked in. It is difficult to beat the ease of maintenance and good fuel mileage of the last of the pre-emission Detroits (DDEC IV). The Cats and Cummins electronic engines were nothing to sneeze at. Both were real work horses that took a beating and kept on ticking. My experience was primarily with the Cummins N-14. I really liked the two of them I dealt with. Kick myself in the back side every time I think that I should have kept one, rebuilt it, and put it in a glider kit truck.
Personnally, I have never understood the fear of the electronic controlled engines. They actually made quite a few things better and made operating them simpler in many ways. It is just the emissions stuff that caused the REAL problems to happen.
