What's the biggest P.O.S you've had to drive?

Tractor ABS light is back with a vengeance.

Check Engine light comes and goes.

Truck didn't feel much worse with 43K over the 23K of my last run.

The squeak behind me that I fought to stop is back too.

 

As the saying goes "Smooth seas don't make for skillful sailors". Great trucks don't make for great drivers.You learn much more having to nurse a sick truck or drive a mountain pass with out a clutch then you do in a truck where everything works.I would not want to drive some of the trucks I have in the past but the best stories and memories come from these trucks.When I interview prospective drivers , if they mention these old dogs with out complaining it is a major plus point.If a driver says this or that truck is beneath them it is a big minus.

 

Don't you know you are not meant to drive with your pinky sticking out like a Brit drinking tea! I drove a 73 Mack 786 COE for 8 years.Pure luxury compared to some of the others from back then.It had cab suspension , suspension seat , power steering , heater , 10 speed splitter box. I thought I was the bees knees. We did have some special trucks though.Oshkosh OTR cab overs. There was no way you could fall asleep driving those trucks , if you were not concentrating or holding on you would be thrown off the bench (cant call it a seat).Another thing , it was impossible to get fat in those trucks.A 14 hour work out in a sauna 6 days a week and you were in good shape. I loved it !

LOGAN years ago you could get a portable stereo ( 8 TRACK ) that plugged into the lighter , was a blast 2 chinese speakers and the DECK up on the dash and you had TUNES

 

a 1993 ford (cant remember the model, it was one of the cab over ones though) had a POS detroit, 26' box... and the thing had a 6 speed that shifted like a car (still confuses me to this day.) on hills even with the box empty it would go from 55 (that was as fast as i could get it to go) down to about 35 or 40. keep in mind all while being empty. it vibrated so bad you couldnt use the mirrors so taking corners in tight spots was a little iffy. the a/c blew HOT air, not just regular air, HOT air. so you cant have that on. because it was a cab over i was right over the engine which always ran hot, so i would end up sweating non stop just driving, even with both windows down. if you hit the brakes hard at all the truck would swing violently to the left.

 

I drove for a transporter once, and I got the 'honor' of driving an old trash truck back to the city it belonged to. Don't know what year it was, but the AC didn't work and there was a crack in the doghouse. It was mid July, picked up in GA and delivered in FL . . . Sucked big time! I was stopping every 45 minutes to an hour just too cool down for a while.

 

77 GMC General with what seems like a 100 inch wheelbase. Spring ride, no cab suspension and bolted down seat. I was delivering block locally in Az. no A/C but did have a fan in the front window to help blow the hot air around. Had a 350 Cummins and a 13 speed and that old truck would do 80 down the interstate with a full load of block and forklift in tow. Short wheelbase made it real easy to get into job sites
