On your taxes at the end of the year truck drivers can claim for every night they spend away from home ($52 per night)
Some companies are taking this amount and paying you per mile so you can't claim it at the end of the year. So out of Butlers .32c per mile, 9c of it is this per diem. So you are only making .23c because that 9c you would have gotten anyway. So to say you are paying yourself to drive their truck is correct to the tune of 9c per mile. It really is a scam, call it what it is, IT IS .23C per mile, so for 10K miles per month or 120K miles a year you are making $27,600 gross. -
Sorry Dryver, but you got it a little wrong. Let me try to explain it to you. IF the driver itemizes his deductions, and does not just claim the standard deduction, by filing a 1040 tax return, a driver can claim the $52 a day for the days he is over nite away from home. This is not a tax credit where you get the $52 taken off the amount of taxes you owe, but instead it reduces your taxable income that you pay your individual tax rate on , by $52 dollars. So let me show you an example of how this works;
suppose a driver drove $52.00/($0.09/miles) = 577.78 miles, one day. He receives $0.23/mile x 577.78 miles = $132.89 for driver that day reduced by his payroll taxes. Lets assume that he pays a total of 18% worth of taxes. He takes home $132.89 - $23.92 = $108.97 in mileage pay PLUS $52.00 in tax free per diem for a total of $160.97. Now lets compare that to a driver that doesn't get per diem. 577.78 miles x $0.32/mile = $184.89. So far so good. But 18% of $184.89 = $33.28 so his take home is just $183.89 - $33.28 = $150.61, which is $10.36 LESS than the per diem driver. Now the non per diem driver MAY have enough deductions at the end of the year to get a small refund, but I myself would rather take the extra money up front instead of having to wait until April 15th rolls around.I hope this clears up this issue for everyone that had questions about it.

Am I the only one who finds this post to be totally confusing?

Think I'll checkem out too....they(Sherry) keep calling
. After 10 yrs driving, had first accident ever, was a rollover recently and NOW I'm a very unpopular prospect.....knew that was coming....shoulda just S M A S H E D that deer instead of tyin ta miss it......now I know why I used ta go deer hunting......you'd think they'd cross at the deer crossing sign.
Sliding 562 feet on your left side is well......quite an experience.
If 97' ends up there....ya better BELEIVE, I'll let my fellow Drivers know how life is there..........Pull no Punches....."Just the facts Maam". -
I dunno about you, but personally I'd much rather drive 2000 miles at 40 cents/mile to make $800,than drive 3000 at 25/mile to make $750.
Better yet, I'd rather be paid by the hour for all hours driving...

However you want to cut it. Butler is paying drivers $0.23 a mile. No driver should be working for that in 2010. This $0.09 a mile benefits Butler way more then it does the driver.
It will affect your credit, social security, unemployment benefits, and disability.
Heres a breakdown.
They pay you $0.23 a mile out of their pocket.
They pay you $0.09 a mile out of your pocket.
