I have read the post on living in your truck. I am wondering how many do or are planning on living in their truck full time. I have been down sizing my life over the past few years. Wife was the first to go. I really want to give up rent and all of the utilities and try to live very modestly. My only bill is child support.

Anyways let me know what it is like and if anyone really lives in the truck full time. Also what would some of the better companies to do this be?

I have a class a but have not driven for 16 years, used to drive for Allied doing house hold moves. Very hard work but I miss it. Thinking of getting back into the moving business and buying my own truck after a year to refresh myself to the industry.

we are pretty much living in our truck. we have a home base (stay with my dad ) when we are in town. we prefer to take our time off in areas other then home base.
we enjoy living on the road. we dont have a car, we just rent one when we need one. its a simplier life and thats how we want to live , simple !!!!!

Highspeed1972 many drivers do live in their truck and good luck on that. The only suggestion I have is get with a Family Member or a good friend and ask if you could use their address as your home address. This would be for mail and tax purposes. Like Sweezly you can take your days off pretty much anywhere.

Non-stop living on the road feels stressful in direct proportion to your number of outside contacts. Single and only a few friends, it's a daily adventure. Married, kids, and a large number of extended family and friends, and it's something you can't get away from fast enough.

Protip: Don't liquidate your possessions to a "minimum set" until after you try the road life on for size. One year will give you an idea, two is better.

As oldmack said give it a try FIRST then after you do the year or two you will know what its like ...As for myself I enjoyed being out there for extended times BUT you need to get off the road for a few days from time to time .....This is how I ran .I did 6 to 9 wks on the road and come home to my parents house for a week or so ( most time didnt stay the whole wk ) and gone again worked out pretty good and have a good cell phone and stay in touch ...And this worked good for me as I was single and took breaks at different places to see. It is doable but NOT all can do this ..If you are a kinda loner not dependent on others you will do fine ...But this is just my 2 cent worth . Wish you the best with it

Thank you all for the advice. I have a pretty high tolerance for BS (as long as I am earning money) That is pretty much my plan, run til I start to get burned out and then take a break as needed. I do have two kiddos so going to make sure what ever I decide that I can bring them during the summer that is.

    Thanks again!

Every company's rider policy is different. (Dictated by their insurer, pretty much.) So be sure to check before hiring on somewhere, if you intend to bring your kids in the summer. I know some outfits have a minimum age regardless of the person's connection to you.

I lived in my truck from 1994 to 2005. Eleven years of no rent, no car no home. When I needed time off I just got a hotel room and a rental car. At this point cost was no object. I loved living this way. Then one day I said I had enough, sold my truck, bought a car, got an apartment. Now I am a company driver, and I love coming home and taking my off time. I work for a one truck company. Trucking is not the main part of the company, and I haul our own product. I know, I am getting off topic.
Back to living in the truck. I was solo, and it was my truck, so it was comfortable, and very livable. It might be diffrent in a company truck. I wish you lots of luck, its a great way to save, and use the who;e country as your home address.
    Safe Miles,

    Larry

Great question, i'm about to head out on the road next week for my 8 weeks of OTR training. After losing my job the end of last year i moved back in with mom and dad while figuring all of this out. I quoted this cuz scuby said tax purposes. i was reading about the standard daily deduction for truck drivers but it said you have to be paying fair market value for rent or mortgage. If i'm staying with family while i'm off the road for a few days can i still write off that deduction. sorry if that is off the direct point. hope someone has an answer, and i'd love to hear anything else about living on the road. i have friends and family all over so my plan was to stay a few days here and there and visiting . thanks for the responses
