need advice.. ive been working for a beer distributer for 8yrs as a bulk tractor trailer driver who delivers beer to local grocery stores. i usually have 4-7 stops a day consisting of checking in the beer and merchandising the last order. i make about 50k a yr and work mon-fri from 5:30am till around 3pm give or take. its a good company who gives us free beer for holidays and monthly dock socials with free food provided but there is no room for higher pay seeing as i have the top driving position and they dont provide raises im looking at applying for some ltl companies like abf, conway, saia, yellow etc.. but ive read alot of bad info from drivers for companies like these .. does anyone have any info that i might use to make my decision.. thanks.

The LTL I know, you have to start out as a road driver doing the same old boring terminal to terminal run or be a driver/dock worker. Either way most are 3rd shift and long hours. Pay is great, but you work for it.
I enjoyed the docks with 50 other crazy drivers on forklifts.
When a P&D opening comes, then you try for it. P&D is the fun of LTL with great hours and pay.

I also delivered cokes so I know what you do. You have a great job and pay. I would stay with it unless you get a P&D position. It's a coin toss.

You're not far from a promotion where you are at. I have a coke buddy that was promoted from route driver to a management position. He is making the $$$ now.

Home at 3. Drunks admire you! :) Many would beg for the job you have.

well i suppose its good you GET free beer, and don't have to be caught stealing it like that jerk from connecticut that then killed several people.......

on the one hand, you are getting "perks" that many other places simply DO NOT do anymore, or at all........why give that up..........?? sure, beer is cheap, especially when you rent it.........i mean after all, we "whiz it out sooner or later, the rental fee's are still cheap.........

ok, you cannot get any more money........hauling beer is heavy work. i know, i too hauled beer for a short time as well as pepsi.......now where you live, beer sales probably stay even all year long........."up here" where we have severe winters, beer sales drop off, meaning guys get laid off........

some of the LTL companies have made cut backs in the starting wages of new hires. i recently went to R+L in my area, and was told, the people working there did not get laid off, but they did loose days off. then any new hires start at a mere $16(?) per hour for 2 years before they get up to the top of $21(?) per hour.......?? are you willing to take such a pay cut yourself........?? and NO perks.......???

as mentioned earlier, you CAN move up in management, where bonuses, as well as money will be there. think about your age, and how hard you work now.......wouldn't it be nice to "semi-retire" as management.......and watch the others work their arses off.........??

i'm kind of in the same boat with my job (run milk) but i have not been here for long. the room for more money is minimal as the last driver was turned a raise down. on the other hand they have had more people walk threw this door then i can remember i was told about, so i could see a boss not be so forth giving on raises but we'll see what happens. i'm going to try and talk him into getting a tractor trailer and then i'd see a big raise but i dont know how much he is up for that. i might even consider leasing my own truck and working for him as a O/O. my advice though, i'd stay put, you've got something a lot of people would kill for and thats a steady job that is paying pretty good. i've heard people who go to work for moving companies as an o/o can make 100k+ a year i dont know how true that is maybe look into that.
