Aw, holy crap. I'm a newbie who hasn't even entered the program yet and it seems like you have to be a math genius to lease. I love a challenge so carry on.....

Mostly some business sense and luck, IMO. If you try to run your business like a company driver would, you're probably going to have some difficulties.

Ok, this thread kept me up til 3 am so I will throw my hat into the ring.

I talked with a rec. and applied with Prime on Wed. They are one of the few hiring right now w/o a cdl. I lost my job ( of 12 years) 13 days ago, one day before my road test that the co. was paying for. Nobody really cares that I've been haulin for 2 yrs on the permit.

My wife and I have always talked of going otr, at least for a couple of years. Who knows, I might love it and stay out there for a while.

Anyway, If Prime is willing to hire and train me(in this economy), then the least I can do is go across the country for a couple of years for them.

Alot of you guys come on here and ##### about which co. is better, who gets paid more, and who's the better driver.....well, you all are supposed to be "professional" drivers, so try to show a little respect to the guys that have the exact same headaches that you do, you just have different color trucks.......and there are ALOT of people out there that have lost everything, there houses, there jobs, there sence of self respect...myself included. So be glad that you can pay the bills, that youu haven't driven into the ditch, that you still have a job and are alive to tell people about it. Trust me on this one, it SUCKS wondering if the unemployment checks will start before the kids get hungry.

And to the rest of you, Thank you for all the good advise and realistic expectations of what it's like "on the road":biggrin_25514:

    Well, as you'll find out......................

There are many truck drivers that can't pay their bills, and the slow time of year is approaching, and the great recovery is now in reverse !!!!!

    I wish you well.......Good Luck !!!!

oh, and one other "silly question" How does the whole getting your license in Mo and then transferring it back to Mass. work?

Pretty much, since Prime is in MO and the test you'll take is the Missouri CDL exam, the license issued is a Missouri CDL. When you take your test, you'll go to the DMV in Springfield, and give them your DL and your CDL permit, and they will give you a MO CDL. Most people want to go home immediatley and switch it back, but I would recommend waiting a few months (see below). After a few months, you go to the DMV in your home state and transfer the CDL back over.

The reason I say wait a few months is this, when I got my CDL thru Prime, I tested and got the CDL on 8/30. I surrendered my VA DL and CDL permit at the DMV in downtown Springfield, and on my first hometime I transferred the license to a VA CDL, this was on 11/2. At the time I transferred the CDL back, Missouri had not yet told Virginia about the license surrender I had made when I got my MO CDL. They informed Virginia on 11/5. Everytime you get a new license in VA, the license number is the same as your old license, so when MO told VA on 11/5 about the surrender, they canceled the license I received on 11/2. I wasn't informed about this till a level 3 inspection 5 months later at the Harrisonville, MO scales. Where I was placed OOS and given a ticket for driving without a license (the DOT cop was very nice, and since he had my license in his hand gave me that instead of CMV with no CDL). It took a faxed letter and copy of my license to the VA DMV to get it cleared up.
