Hello. Not sure if I am doing this correctly or putting my post in the right place. My apology if it's wrong.
Took a trip out of town and came home Sunday August 8th, and in the mailbox was a new first-time-ever-with-my-name-on-it California CDL A. It has all the endorsements too (except for passenger). The very next day I had a job interview with UPS Freight. I was never called back for a 2nd interview though probably because I have no driving experience. Wednesday August 18th, I picked up a new TWIC card, also with my name on it; another first. So, now I have a class A license and a TWIC card, but I have no experience.
After spending a lot of time reading on this forum, I decided to look into Swift. There seem to be a lot of people here who dislike Swift (to say the least) but I have to start somewhere, so I contacted a Swift recruiter on the internet, and they called me at home. We set it up for me to start their orientation process on Monday, August 30th. My recruiter said my road test would be complete the first day of orientation. Then I got a call from my recruiter a few days ago saying he needed me to take the road test on Friday (today) because the orientation was going to have a lot of people in it, and they were coming to the terminal from more than 100 miles away. He said to take the road test, drive home afterwards and return Monday morning for the orientation. I do not know what the other peoples distance of "over 100 miles away" has to do with it. A round trip from my home to the terminal is also over 100 miles. Anyway, I did go to the terminal and took the road test this morning as my recruiter had scheduled. I cannot find any other company to start with without any experience, so I decided to do within reason whatever Swift asked me to do.
My appointment was for 9AM, but my recruiter said I might want to get there 1/2 an hour early. I arrived in the office about 8:20, so I was more than 1/2 an hour early. At about 9:30, the person who was to give me the test spoke with me briefly before we went out to the truck for the test. To make a long story short, they said I was borderline, and asked me if I could go back to the school I went to for a little more training on shifting. I called the instructor at the school, and I will be going back next week for a little more instruction. Specifically what I am doing wrong is, I have a habit of putting the clutch all the way to the floor when double-clutching and forgetting to rev the engine to 1500 rpm when down-shifting. Also, sometimes I forget and rev the engine when up-shifting. I was nervous but that is not an excuse, it's my own fault. The mentor I will be assigned to might be an owner-operator, and I sure don't want to grind their gears . . . . and I KNOW they wouldn't want me to, either!
I will not be starting at the Swift orientation on Monday after all.

Your time will come. Be patient and it will pay off. My husband was bummed out when he didnt pass his cdl the first time.
He went back to school for another week and he was glad he did. That extra week really helped him with things like "pushing the clutch to the floor"
and he appreciated the extra practice time. He went back and passed his cdl with flying colors.

The only thing I see you doing wrong is doubting in yourself and focusing on Swift. There are too many other companies out there that will give you a chance. You just need to do a little more research and apply yourself a little harder. Driver, you will thank me if you take this advice! Just to put it in leymans terms, in any other job field would you just apply at Walmart and take this as your only option? Don't mean to sound harsh, this is just my personal battle against recruiters and the mega-companies taking advantage of you new drivers who are trying to make a decent living for yourselves and your families! Have you personally ever seen any other companies go to these lengths, spending millions of dollars trying to get people to work for them? Does this really sound feasible, especially in these times? Just this forum alone has hundreds of other companies recommended by other drivers that are decent outfits to work for. Do your homework, it will pay off in the long run.

Being nervous is not an excuse...but it is a reason!
Swift telling you that you're borderline is great that they're willing to give you another look.
Also, consider Watkins and Shepard. They will let you practice, by yourself, in their terminal lots every day during their 10 day orientation and will keep "borderline" students beyond the 10 days in some cases.
You've worked hard to get your CDL and TWIC card, show them your serious and work with your school for some shifting work.
Best of luck to you!!!!!!basstime54 Thanks this. -
That's just what he needs, practice without a trainer! (W&S)

dont worry it will all come together, just dont rush and try to relax.

You will get in, just give it a little extra time. Some things just happen for a reason even though we don't understand why. But patience and persistence will pay off in the end.

Well what they're saying is that since you have a CDL, you should know how to shift and do the things expected that got you that CDL. They must have seen something that caused them to say that to you...They will give you another chance and that's good. You definately dont want to go to W&S...they don't train you with a trainer and you need to know what you're doing in 10 days....

Hang in there. It'll come and you'll be a better driver for the reteaching and for your determination.

Thanks everyone for the comments/replies, it gives me hope, helps me look at it differently. Your taking time to consider my dilemma means a lot to me!
I decided to try and get on with Swift for whatever reason. The last company I decided to try and get on with for whatever reason -- nothing to do with driving -- I stayed with for almost 25 years.Last edited: Aug 28, 2010
