I have a Eaton RTLO187018B trans behind a cat 3406e and it just started to make a grinding noise when shifting from low range into high range...? It doesn't matter if I clutch, or switch range in neutral it makes one aweful grinding sound as it shifts into gear. Almost sounds like a gear dragging across the rest. Anyone experience this before? Also noticed that can't seem to float gears very well now without grinding. Syncro?(sp).

To diagnose a bad synchronizer confirm it's not air related first..
If it growls at range shifts and using the splitter too, then I'd say you have a restriction..riflemen Thanks this. -
Sound like the high low syncro. Very common with any road ranger with a few miles on them.

Well it can go either way. The last one we had done was $3000 but it needed gears also. It went to long with the bad syncro and wore the gear set. Also it was in a IH 9200 and the whole trans needed to be droped to get the rear cover off. Not enough room with it in the truck. I think most trucks it can be removed in place.

Ya most trucks you can just rip it out w/o removing the trans. Basically unhook air to the range and splitter valves and rip the driveshaft off. Get 2 long (6-7") 3/8 bolts and bolt on top of each side. Hammer out the dowel pins on top right and bottom left. Drain the oil. Pull the rest of the bolts out and pull the rear out to the end of the bolts. Get a jack, secure to jack and remove bolts and pull out.
Usually if the synchro is bad, always a good idea to change your high and low gear because the friction plate will wear the gear down and when the new syncro gets wore down a bit it will be doing it fairly quickly before if you changed the gear. Also when its out, also a good idea to change your aux section drive gear bearing. Check all counter shafts for cracks and inspect all bearings. Just remember the shims that are for each counter shaft, if you dont change bearings you wouldnt have to reshim it. Very easy to do, if you take it to a shop look at 6-10 Hours to redo it depending on the trans model and the truck that its in. (Not really sure on labor times). Replace all o-rings in the range/splitter valves and change the insert valve and air regulator. Thats what i usually do to prevent any problems.
