I'm attending truck driving school right now, currently in my 13th week of an 18 week program with AIT in Fontana, CA. A little over a month ago I applied to May and got a pre-hire offer from them, along with the pre-hire offers I got from Schneider and Swift, and a few other companies. Anyway, a couple days ago I called up Opal, who is my recruiter with May, to check in with her. She told me as of right now, May isn't hiring out of California, for the time being, although they were a little over a month ago when I first applied. So she tells me keep calling back every week or so and keep checking in with her, at least in the last week or two before I graduate, and she'll keep me updated. Now my question is...to anybody with knowledge of MTC's hiring practices or whatever. Is this kind of thing normal with them - these hiring freezes in certain areas? If so, how long does it typically last before they start hiring again? I still have a little over 5 weeks left before I finish school and will be ready to head out to orientation, training, etc. But of the companies I'm entertaining offers with thus far, I think I would slightly prefer May over the others out there. So I guess I'm just hoping somebody can tell me that they think this will blow over by the time I graduate :biggrin_25521:.

from what i've been told, the reason for this freeze is that May is simply running out of trucks to put new hires in, Opal is My recruiter as well, and i've heard the same deal from more than one person. as to if it's true or not, i'm not 100% but i wouldn't doubt it in this economy, i was told i WILL be going to orientation but i put my foot in the door at May over a month ago so if i get in i think i'm just BARELY squeezing through the door there.

i do know that May just purchased 100 new tractors as of July 2010, i think 20 pete 387's and 80 Prostars. it's in the news section of their website.

I don't doubt in the slightest that it's true. What she told me is that they currently have too many drivers from there (Cali), and that's the reason for it. Obviously as my recruiter, being able to get me to sign on means money in her pocket, so no, I'm quite sure she's not lying about that. Only part of what she said I do have a problem with is their reasoning, although maybe something might have gotten "lost in translation" a little bit perhaps, but if their reason for not presently hiring people out of California really is simply that they have too many drivers from here...? Come on May, that's just not cool!! LOL! I get discriminated against on just the basis of being from California alone, entirely more than enough as it is, without having to lose out on a job because of that too!:biggrin_2559:

Well anyway, I guess all I can do is keep in contact with Opal, keep my fingers crossed, and hope this changes, if not by the time I finish school, at least shortly thereafter. *Knocks on wood*

Good luck to you with May NWW! If you find a little bit of time now and then, perhaps you could keep us posted on how things go for you with them?

After the hottest summer and wettest to boot, it might be a relief.

BUT, if like last winter, I will pass.

not sure if this info affects California hires, but i just learned from a friend of mine who was with a trainer at may that a bunch of new hires, including himself, quit May, (said OTR just wasn't for him) i finally got an orientation date yesterday and i'm set to go to MTC's orientation on Sept 20th. i figure if 3 or 4 guys just dropped out you may have a chance, so give them another call and keep trying! good luck to ya!

great :biggrin_25513: I just read this thread ,arghhh May is like at the top of my list of trucking companies I'd like to work for. Has anyone any "new" information on if May is hiring or not hiring Cali Drivers. I know I have a slim chance as I am graduating on Dec 24 and with the slowest 2 months for trucking coming up Jan /Feb. it is a very hard time to even find an opening cept for the worst of the worst (i.e. Weiner er Werner, CR England, Swift (although I think their not too bad and very safe).

Any new information would be great.

    John
