The difference is im an athlete, I do a lot of lifting, and I can pick up my body weight and press it over my head.

When I do a physical it is in/out just about that fast, everything sounds fine, my blood pressure is right where it should be, my blood sugar as well. That and most people guess my weight to be about 210 lbs.

And you know, if it worked out that I just couldnt go to work for prime, well oh shucky darns, you know im going to lose a lot of sleep over that one.

Oh wait, thats right, I own my own company. Guess I dont have to worry about it.

The fact of the matter is this: there are certain people who have structural disorders that cause OSA, often corrected by surgery, as was the case with your daughter. These cases are actually quiet rare and can be treated by a simple surgery, as proven by your daughter's case.

The vast majority of OSA cases are caused by obesity. That is the fact. When fat deposits itself around the body, it will find the "path of least resistance" which is usually in soft tissue. There is ample soft tissue in and around the throat, therefore, fat will deposit itself there. When this happens, the airway is narrowed, the floppy soft tissues that kind of hang around, like the uvula (that little dangly thing in the back of your throat) is enlarged. When the person falls asleep, that enlarged little floppy thing falls into the throat that is narrowed by fatty deposits and thereby closes off the airway, the air cannot get through, the person "stops breathing" the brain becomes starved for air and the person is roused from sleep just enough to clear the airway, but not enough for the person to become fully conscious, which disrupts the sleep cycle without the person actually knowing about it....Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Ask any EMT or Paramedic whether they find it easier to intubate (place a breathing tube in the throat) a person who is of normal weight or a person who is obese. I've been there and done that. Due to the narrowed airway of the obese person, it is much more difficult to intubate an obese person.

Whatever you want to believe, study after study after study has proven that obesity is the NUMBER ONE (#1!!!) risk factor for OSA.

Your daughter's case, while definitely interesting to talk about, is a very rare event in the annals of sleep apnea study. And I'm very happy she was able to have it permanently corrected....unless she gains a s***load of weight. Then she may develop OSA again. These are facts, whether you like it or not:

    http://www.umm.edu/patiented/articles/what_causes_sleep_apnea_000065_3.htm

Your daughter falls under the last category listed in this. Hers was structural. Nobody is saying your girlfriend has OSA. What they are saying is she falls under the highlighted and bolded sections.

Gawd! Talk about someone who refuses to see the forest through the trees!

I've already stated that I'm 5'6", 260 pounds. Morbidly obese. I have Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Will mark three years on CPAP on October 15th.

My father is 5'6", 160 pounds. He's been on CPAP for over a decade.

So, no, there is not always a direct correlation between BMI and SA. That said, I have a close friend in CA (not a driver). He is an inch taller than me, but at one point hit 301 pounds! He went to the doctor in July of 2009, and the doc basically told him "diet or die".

    He did.

He's now 152 pounds. He's off the CPAP. He's off his BP meds. And he's off any diabetic meds he was on the verge of having to take.

My experience has been a marked increase in energy despite my size, and virtually no desire for afternoon naps any longer. Honestly, I don't know how I used to drive early mornings without killing myself or someone else prior to using the CPAP.

So call it discrimination, call it unfair, whine, curse, whatever. Bottom line is they can hire who they want under the conditions they dictate.

It's called life. Now get on with it.
