Don't waste money on the dealer, very easy to replace yourself. Been there and fixed it on the road in about 10 minutes. I would not waste money on both springs, if the other one breaks someday then change it.

springs arnt that hard to do jd---you might be able to use a 2by4 to prop hood open a bit as well to take tension off of springs-----just be careful that kw hood is HEAVY

I know guys...but my history is a total indicator of my future. Its like bulbs. If one blows, the other one aint far behind. So I do them in pairs.
Anytime I dont, the other one fails within a week. Its like murphy's law or something...
Now, the KW parts girl and I are good friends. I always get a discount on larger cost items like this..sometimes its a really decent discount. She is not sure of how long she will have a job there (economy and all) so it's usually in my best interest to purchase stuff NOW...I guess it's all sort of a gamble with money. If I was running the rig, I would only replace the broken part and wait - as you guys suggest....
Heck ya, this hood is heavy. I like the 2x4 idea. My wife can help too, but only so much...

its a toss up to change one or both--look at the spring--see if it is discoloured/pitted--who knows maybe it was changed not to long ago
-
Replaced both springs. My cost each $115.
Petro tossed them on for $45. Took 2 guys to hold the hood and one little dude to sneak under it as it was lowered on him.
KW wanted $113 plus fees/tax to install. Hell with that... -
What color was the spring? The reason I ask the white ones were pretty good but the brown ones were junk. I see you replaced both but honestly you didn't have to. We've owned trucks that never broke a spring and others that have broken the same spring 4 times. When I replace them I usually open it open it all the way and crawl in front of the radiator. Then you can clip in the front hooks and stretch it and put the bolt in the back. They really aren't that hard to pull that far. They have more tension when the hood is closed.

But it looks so nice in his drivway
BTW
It is a nice looking ride for a KW -
Broken one was white. Other one was brown....Let's see if any of them break from this point. For $45 labor, it was worth it as 3 guys worked on the truck to do it..
Thanks. I think it looks nice SITTING in the drive too. At least that way I am not finding something ELSE wrong with it. -
His truck sitting in the driveway looks way better than my carhauler sitting in the weeds,.....................

I laughed but then realized I shouldnt have...

Petro took good care of me. I guess I wont tell you they put the bolt on WRONG 2x..but they corrected it. Actually I was treated better there than I have been anywhere else. The service writer was "Jolene" and she was every bit of a "Jolene" that you would expect. Holds no punches and talks straight up cash #####.
Truck Country here has a decent chic that runs the service desk too, but has NO sense of humor and will NOT wheel-n-deal like the 2nd shift manager will....
Which makes no sense when they have a large NEON sign that is lit (most of the time) "NO WAITING SERVICE".
Seems to me one would rather have the guys working than playing pocket pool. But whoami to ask ?
