i was so nervous i quit drinking caffiene for the test, god i wish i had kept that up. i dont see a problem with their guidelines, i would think if you are older your heart wouldnt need to go up as much to cause an issue, a younger person can handle it more. i dont know i guess, its all about insurance nowdays

220 - Age x 0.9 The formula itself shows the discrimination here. When people are competing for work they should all be held to the same standard.
The companies are treating the application process the same way life insurance companies do, when selling life insurance.
It's just my opinion, but I think if the issue was pushed it might be able to be changed. Companies can have stricter requirements than what the DOT requires, but I see a problem when it comes to different standards for different age groups. And there is also the fact that Women have faster heart rates than men, this puts them at a greater disadvantage also.

To the original poster, here is a site that explains how to go about filing a complaint if you feel you have been discriminated against. If you'll notice it mentions anyone over the age of forty can file a discrimination report for age discrimination, which also includes discrimination in testing.

OK,They have the right to test anyone how ever they want.No problem. Can't do anything about that. But what really ticks me off! I'm in good shape,I get my heart rate up all the time.I ride mountain bikes, allot, while I don't ride with a heart rate monitor on me. I bet when I'm climbing a good long hill my rate goes well over 170.I just hate a bunch of office butt heads telling me I can't do something I know #### well I can.I don't fit their stupid mold. And I don't like them trying to cram me into it.And like I said, now I don't have to put up with it...By the way,I'm 62.So it really pisses me off.

Paint me the outsider here (...I been there before) but I don't have a problem with the testing method. It's been used across all industries for years, and even our military uses a similar scale. Fact is, a 50 YO has had 30 more years for plaque to build up in the arteries, generally gets less exercise than a 20 YO, and is not in the best shape they have ever been in. There are exceptions, of course. But when it comes to safety on the highways I'd like to err on the side of caution. Plan ahead...if you want to change jobs and you think a skills test is in your future, start an exercise plan now and maybe look at a diet change. 60-90 days you'll probably pass with no troubles.
Women in general do have faster heart rates then men, but its not because they are women....it's because in general they are smaller than men. The heart rate is more aligned to body size...the smaller the body, the faster the heart rate. A small man would have a faster heart rate than a large woman. Course I don't know.....I've been with some large women when their heart was really racing! (did I say that out loud??)BusDriver Thanks this. -
Hello Truckerdragon. I hit the "thanks" button but really wanted to say, "Thanks, and can i come work for you?!" Maybe because i am up there in age, i think cooler heads probably prevail in most situations! Cheers.
