How to handle domicile/mail if living out of truck

You can get unemployment as a trucker except when you are an owner operator or lease owner.

Company drivers who receive pay checks are eligible.

 

Why would you want to keep your california residency? How would this benefit you if you were living out of your truck except by taking money away from you with high income taxes? Why don't you find a state that doesn't have an income tax and then do the UPS store thing because a regular P.O. Box doesn't establish residency.

 

you are correct except you forget... If you QUIT your job you are ineligable for unemployement because you voluntarily gave up your job. Trucking company's know this so they don't fire drivers, they treat them badly by sending them crappy loads or not sending you loads so you have to rot in a truckstop for awhile untill the driver cries uncle and quits.

Oh, yeah, Owner ops of all forms can be eligable depending on the state and what the laws are. If they form a corporation in any state they are required by FEDERAL LAW TO PAY UIT (unemployement insurance tax) and eligable to recieve benefits. I'm incorporated, I pay UIT, I can lay myself off and collect if I needed too because I went out of business for some reason.

 

PO Boxes and PMB's don't seem to work anymore to establish residence. (They never legally did, but people got away with it.)

That's why Truckers Home Base was set up. It's in the same category as a campground, where you can have a legal residence.

 

People need to keep this in mind when dealing with legal documents and such. It is not the same.
