now i keep hearing about hard times and drivers being out of work and all kinds of problems and i wonder why eveyone has so many problems, after thinking about it i think i no and hear is my opion on how to change it, and yes it is my opinion and nobody has to agree with me let your own thoughts guide you.

now first of all let me say i own my own trucks im not looking for a job but i am a member of several trucking sites and i ge t several e-maile every mourning looking for drivers all kinds of drivers and i mean evey mourning and i wonder why there are so many out of work and cant find a job i think i have found the answer.

when you gewt up in the mourning do you look in the mirrior to see if your presentable? probably not , do you have on a pair of shorts and flip flop shoes or tennis shoes on if you do theres your answer you are no presentable people don't want you because you look bad they dont want some one loking like you represnting there company would you? now you may not agree with me but you looking for a job not me , wheather you agree or not you can not look for a job looking like that and expect to find a job simple as that i don't are what you think business is business thats all there is to it .

how is your attitude ? do you meet your praspective emplyer like you no it all or are you quite and respectful. do you no that you can open your mouth and say a complete sntence and the man will no how much experience you have or not have, your not fooling anybody except your self. you can't help yourself.

but shorts are cool you say well i got a flash for you shorts do not change the temprture one degree that is a joke thats on you they do make you look like a diddy bopper and no one wnats that driving an 80000 pound truck they get sued along with you.
now im sure your mother dressed you in shorts when you were a little boy BUT your not a little boy now yours supposd be a gown man might try acting like it it does make a differenc.

and don't go looking for a job looking like you live under a bridge take a #### bath before you go the way you present yourself will make the difference. try it you might find that youl like looking human.

best of luck to you. southernpride :biggrin_25514:

Here's some more advice: when applying for a job ( weather driving or not ), dress like your ready to go to work now. Don't go in for an interview with tank tops, t-shirts, holly jeans, flower-shirts, flip flops, like SP said in his post wear clean clothes & look presentable, & above all know what the job curtains. Be knowledgeable when you go in for your interview.

All jokeing aside, clean shaven, freashly bathed,(dont forget to use soap) hair combed, teeth brushed, and ready to go to work clothing (jeans, dickies, polo or button down shirt, work boots and gloves, is a sure sign that a person is ready for work! the shorts and flipflops wont cut it if they want to try you out on the spot! and their gos your chance for employment

AS my dad used to tell me and I told my sons and my classes when I was instructing:

You ONLY get one chance to make a first impression!

AS SP said and I KNOW I did in another post that and as mine usually do it truned into an arse blistering! I don't sugarcoat or coddle swaggle people! Yes, that's an old word from down south that's not used anymore!

Go prepared to go to work! it's simple! Take pride in your self! Would you go out trying to meet the opposite sex looking like a moron? I don't think so.
Then there are OSHA dress codes for heavy equipment operators.
WHAT??? HEO's you ask? Whats that got to do with truck driving?
Well CMVs ARE heavy equipment! They also go onto sites where shoes, long pants, shirts with sleeves and headgear are a requirement!

DOT used to write tickets to drivers who were barefoot or wore flip flops and sandles as even walking around a truck can cause injuries you would NOT believe! Rip that toe off on a piece of metal or step on a nail or large screw that didn't make it into a tire!Even kicking a tire in those non shoes can cause damages and then try to get your insurance company or worker comp to pay for your stupidy. Yeah if you hold your breath long enough they might or try throwing a 3 some temper tantrum on the ground!

I was at a BK one evening after a drop and this young lady to be polite came and sat down next to me after her job interview with the manager across the room from me.

She was all upset that he would not hire her "the was she was."
    Here is how she was:
Black baggy goth stupidly ripped jeans with enough metal to sink her in a deep mud puddle with wallet chains, stupid looking black high top sneakers with pretty colored laces, Her shirt or what she was calling a shirt was a halter top that covered the bottom of her breasts IF she didn't put her arms above her belly button! And no bra! Her hair was some pinkish red with blue high lights and looked like it MIGHT have been dreadlocks after a hurricane finished blow drying it. Her makeup is what Lady Gaga now imitates! It had all the "natural" colors needed for a rainbow and the metal stuck in her face. If she were to go even close to either an MRI unit or a scrap yard with a large magnet crane she'll be stuck by her face to the magnets because of all the metal stuck in it!
In other words she couldn't understand why he wouldn't hire her because she was being herself.
I had to explain to her it wasn't against the law because he didn't hire her. I told her that if she really wanted the job she needed to dress to impress and her style of impressing wasn't going to get her a job unless it was a tatoo shop and piercing parlor!

With jobs being as tight and hard to get dressing like you're on vacation just might not get you that job! It's not that hard to have the "proper" dress to wear for an interview OR for your customers! Yes they ARE YOUR customers and you're a representative of your company! I've seen drivers kicked off docks for stupid clothing. I've seen drivers refused admittance to a union yard or construction site because they think dressing for the beach is his "right" Yeah it also their right to kick you off the site or keep you out or off a dock. Dress is really not a "right" it's a recommendation for safety and for common sence! Use it!

If you are going to blame truckers being out of work because they wear shorts, you have made an absurd statement.

Being that it is 2010, people wear nice shorts these days. No, they are not the sagging shorts or pants with your underwear showing, but they are the nicer shorts.

You may have grown up in a different time than a bunch of us, but some of the things you are say are wrong.

Experienced drivers are out of work....Yep they sure are. Why?

    3 things

1- Being too greedy when the economy was ripe. Drivers, like me, would go to a different trucking outfit because of better pay and/or benifits. There is nothing wrong with that but when you do it exsesivly, employers now frown on that. Thus making it hard for these types of drivers to make it in 2010.

2- If you don't have a "clear" MVR or DAC, with today's economy, trucking companies will not hire you. Some companies will report negatively to DAC if you just pick your nose funny....

3- If you fail to meet the liking of the company because of the above 2 things, there is probably 20 students looking to take your place.

Now you may have an opinion about what fashion is, but I can tell you the way I roll. When I am in my truck, I dress comfortably. I want to be comfortable when I am driving. Now when I get out to a shipper or receiver, I treat them like my customers because they are. So I am usually fresh out of the shower and have deodorant on and clean shaven when I deal with my customers. I also wear a nice shirt and jeans or shorts. Depending where and what time of the year it is.

No, I don't look like a hobo. No, I don't look like a gangster. No, I don't look like a lawyer. No, I don't look like a truck driver. I look like myself and what makes me feel good and presentable to others.

So when I have gone to orientations, I dress to impress like I would for any other job interview. That's just it, the things you bring up, I have seen, but I have never seen that in a job orientation.

I do however, see that at alot of truck stops, shippers and receivers.

    So I agree and disagree.

I'll wear my shorts and tennis shoes. You can wear your jeans and boots. Different strokes for different folks.

That photo is hilarious! It's obviously photo shopped but it's still hilarious.

Sad thing is...I saw a guy this morning at the Petro in Scranton, PA. that looked just like him...I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't him.

He wasn't quite as deformed as the guy in the picture...But he didn't miss it by much
