Hello everyone. I'm going to be retiring from the Navy soon after 20 years and I'm entering trucking as my second career. I have been doing a lot of research and I have a few companies that look promising and that I'm interested in. I've read a lot, but I was looking for anyone that had driven for any of the following companies and can lend their insight:

J&R Schugel Trucking Inc - New Ulm MN
    Fortune Transportation - Windom MN
Smith Trucking Inc - Worthington MN
    Bison Transport - Central Canada

I'm single and used to spending lots of time away out to sea, so home time is not really important to me. My main priorities are:
    1) Good dispatch/management team.
    2) Lots of consistent miles
    3) Solid, clean, well maintained equipment.

Any feedback (good or bad) would be greatly appreciated. If you guys know any other companies in the Midwest (MN, IA, and SD) that are legit, please pass them on.

    Thanks Casey

I call JR Schugel today and the recruiter(some woman) was nothing but rude to me over the phone. I told her that I have 18 years driving experience. Most of it local and some of it OTR. My last company went under in April and I work for another for about a month July/August and it didn't pan out. What floored me the most was she(this recruiter) asked me if I had any winter driving experience? I have lived in Minnesota most of my life and every company I worked for was out of Minnesota, so what do you think? I thought to myself "What a S***** C***" Duh!

I think, friend,as you did not mention your OTR experience,if you have none, this will be your first significant problem.Six years ago,I went to Schugel in New Ulm after pulling a curtain side for six months,-it was not good enough cause it was not bonafide OTR. I have though, heard more good than bad from the drivers who DO work there and believe it would be a good place to start,or for that matter stay if it works for you.. Good Luck

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I thought where it says wannabe in my profile would indicate that I have no experience. Thats why I'm on this blog asking questions so I can get smart on the trucking business. Thanks for the info though I do honestly appreciate it.

Hey Casey Welcome. I think Bumpy was referring to Mpls Judd but also try going to some of the local companies as well. I.E. grain elevators or what not. It would at least be a foot in the door. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Shriner75/Bumpy - My bad guys, I thought it was directed at me. I have a question for you. I thought that as an inexperienced driver you could only pretty much get hired by one if the big carriers? I guess I was hoping that J&R or Fortune in Windom would be willing to waive my lack of 6 mo OTR experience since I have a spotless record? I saw on a couple different websites that while they can waive lack of inexperience on a case by case basis?
Secondly is there a resource to find those smaller elevator type jobs? You peaked my interest there. How do they pay compared to the big OTR companies?
    Thanks for the insight guys.
    Casey

Just go to your local elevator and talk to the manager. Might have to start as a grunt but once you show how determined you are they will work with ya. The company I work for is out of Marshall and they are world widw but I get paid by the hour and am in a bed every night. Sometimes the elvator would even know if theres a farmer that might need help. Gotta start somewhere and at least you can get a small of driving. Go over to FCA (Farmers Co-op Association) in Trimont there and talk to them. Its worth a shot at least. I know my boss was looking for seasonal drivers just for harvest but never know if it can lead to longer employment. Thats how I startd out and have been there a year next month.

Last week I walked in to a Co-op that was advertising for a Class A driver, and showed them my spotless driving record and 4 months of driving experience and they hired me on the spot.

This is a day job Mon - Fri. and will be within 100 miles of home all week long, so no overnights or at least very few.

It is seasonal, so I will have plenty of work this fall and next spring. I will likely plow snow this winter with a tandem truck for someone this winter.

    shriner75 Thanks this.
