FAT people are Discriminated against at prime

    When society made it too expensive and inconvenient to smoke, I quit smoking. I went from 3 packs a day to zero ten years ago, cold turkey, and never picked them up again. So, this 6'2" 375 pound driver has will power. Don't tell me I don't. When I started driving a decade ago, I was in the same shape I'm in today. I get up every morning, seven days a week and do my job.

    In order for me to conform to your standards, I have to literally starve myself, and spend 2 to 3 hours of my downtime walking, running, etc every day, for the rest of my life. And you are probably right, I should be doing that. But my point is in order for me to look the way you want me to look, I have to make extreme sacrifices most of you would be unwilling to make yourselves.

    We all have different body types. That's just the way it is. Some people can stuff fast food burgers in their face all day and still stay thin. That doesn't mean you are a better human being than me. You just have a different body type. That's all. I go to the doctor on my own. My doctor is a 145 pound man and he was amazed when my cholesterol level was lower than his. I just had a stress test, my heart is healthy. You cannot judge a person's health by BMI alone.

    If Prime or any other company does not want to hire me, I have no problem with that. They have every legal right to discriminate on that basis. They are not my problem as I read this thread. My problem is with the judgmental types on here who want to take away my ability to work without knowing what the hell they are talking about.

    What about the PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEES who discriminate against the PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYERS.

    They go through all the recruitment , preliminary procedures , and then SORRY CHANGED MY MIND.

    It costs $ to do all the preliminary stuff and takes up a lot of time , and that results in some really good prospects being passed over as recruiters wasted time on applicants who had no intention of working for them.

    As for the FAT issues , lots of other fields of EMPLOYMENT discriminate , just take HOOTERS for example and its for more than HEALTH issues.

    The reason I am in good shape is not because I can eat cheeseburgers all day and still be thin... it is because I DON'T eat cheeseburgers at fast food places on the road. I also have NEVER ONCE eaten at the truckstop buffets like I see alot of guys doing all of the time. I have a refridgerator, freezer, and microwave on the truck. I eat as healthy as possible on the road... and never snack while driving.

    It is not about a different "body style"... it is about a healthy lifestyle. If I ate like alot of these big fat guys, I would be fat too.

    Change your lifestyle to a healthy one... for the sake of your job, and (more importantly) for your life's basic health which leads to life longevity... before it is too late, my friend.

    Well, I'm 5'9" 182, and I could stand to lose about 15 lbs. I would say 5'11" 230 is considered fat... no offense.

    If your age is correct, 34, you are right about at the age where pounds begin to not come off so easy, and seem to be added with every beer or cookie. Of course, some body types seem to be immune to this effect.

    But I was amazed how the weight stuck around more and more as I got to be in my upper 30's and now 40. I'm 6'1", 230. When I was 35, I was 190. And I watch what eat, exercise somewhat regularly (actually jogged 3 miles yesterday).

    As to the first sentence: Baloney, malarkey and pure bunk. If a driver allows him or herself to gain a "negative appearance" it is not because of hours and regulations. We are all mandated a ten hour break each day. Are you trying to say that's not enough time to get out of the truck, get a daggone shower and walk around a little bit? If that driver accepts a load that is supposed to be run by a team, then he or she is in the wrong. I don't really care what that load pays. Nobody is forcing any of us to run loads like that. If you work for a company that expects it, you always have the choice to not work there. Record too crappy to go anywhere else? Well, you made the decisions that led to your crappy record and I don't feel sorry for you.

    Answer to the question: Their "help" lies within themselves...with the encouragement from the rest of us. I will give every encouragement I can to someone who wants to improve his or her lot in life.

    As to the propensity toward certain health problems, if you have these tendencies and they can be prevented by weight control, then the results of failing to control your weight are not my problem. Again, I will encourage you if you really want to do something about it.

    A large number of us are loners. There is nothing wrong with that. However, we are also in the service industry and are the face of the company we represent. The suits in the office are nothing more than voices on the phone. It is us the customer actually sees. Therefore, loner or not, it might be a fair idea to at least be presentable, whatever your body style is.

    And you are absolutely correct about the babe attack comment...LOL....and I am the first to say I am no hunk magnet...but I take care of myself. I hope more of our brothers and sisters out here can do the same.

    i worked with a guy that was probabely about 6 2"---maybe 400 lbs---the bad part isnt that he was fat--but he smelled soooo bad--he could have a shower in am--by noon you couldnt be near him---very nice guy---couldnt even go in his truck tho--honestely smelt like a a cross between a chicken coop and a pig pen--and so big that the seat was broken out of the floor--the back was bent back as well---looked like a lazy boy sitting there---so anyways customer servide used to get calls about how shippers didnt want him there cause he smelled so bad---was a bad situation all around

    The way I see it is companies have requirements for a reason. One obvious one is if you're too obese to crawl under your tractor and check the brakes, there's a safety factor involved. Numbers are arbitrary. They have to start somewhere.
    Now I fight weight all the time. I manage to keep my weight and BMI just under the limit, but it involves walking most days around the truck stop. It involves being careful what I eat. I love mash potatoes and gravey, but I just can't eat them often. I stay away from the buffets most of the time.
    As for eating? I have a small refrigerator in the truck and a microwave. My grocery bill runs about $40 per week. I can have oatmeal, cereal or a protien shake for breakfast, can have fresh fruit, have brats on some days, pb&j on others and have found all kinds of foods that fix simply and easily (five minutes or less) in my micro.
    It's a matter of willingness to change. If this is the requirements of this industry, then we have to change. complaining about what the truckstops serve is balogna. We are all responsible for our own diets and exercise. In all the years I've spent walking around truckstops in the evenings, I have only met a couple other drivers doing the same. We love to complain, but the reality is we need to take action on our own account for our benefit.
