My bf works the sears/North East route. When his APU first broke down he put in a message. They sent him to the Allentown, PA terminal. They took a few days and didn't fix it. My bf got fed up cause his paycheck took a beating.
Maybe 3 time last winter he's attempted to get it fixed and even if he's not near PA they have him take a load routed in the direction of Allentown and then send him there to fix it.
He never attempted to go to another garage because he assumed it would come out of his pocket if anyone besides Werner people touched it.
We were never told anything about 'thermo king'.
My bf was never taken 'on the spot' because once at Allentown there were other trucks with what they considered bigger problems than no heat in winter, he had to pester about a hotel room - no one offered him the advice about that, EVER - and wait until they got to his truck. Where they tinkered around with it, said they fixed it and when he got in the truck it was STILL blowing cold air. By that time after waiting, losing money, no WiFi or anything for entertainment. He would just leave.
I'm sure Werner has the money to pay for him to get it fixed at an outside garage where they may know what they are doing but Werner didn't offer that. They routed him back to Allentown every time.
Even now, he's been there since 3am TUESDAY. No work - no pay.
Turns out the Clima Cab people came to Allentown to teach the Allentown people how to actually replace the APU's and it seems they do 1 truck a day... and I dunno how many are ahead of my bf but he hasn't been fixed yet.
He asked for work [from Werner] until the garage was ready for him and they said 'nothing's available'. So he's waiting there - thankfully in a hotel room lastnight [which he had to pester for] still until someone gets to his truck.
You know how he got a hotel last night? He happened upon another driver who's been waiting there since MONDAY for the exact same APU prob. That driver told him where to go to request a room and when he did the response he got was "Who told you that?" like it was a secret!!!! Then they said they didn't have his truck on record to be there to be fixed and there was a bunch of back and forth but finally he did get the room [and it's a double by the way so they can throw another guy in should one 'find out' that they're giving rooms to Werner drivers. -
That is what i'm telling you when something else happens dont tell Werner anything. Go to a shop where you can get it fixed then send in a breakdown mac. If you go to the terminal you will get screwed with no grease. I had drivers who had been working for werner for yrs tell me this also.

so if you go to another garage, send a break down message, have the otehr garage start the work, then they just foot the bill?

I do not know about Werner' however an experienced drive can make a U-Turn safely. not to say the driver who posted this is not experienced but its a matter of company policy. I do respect your post. Having spent many years on the road in many situations sometimes a U- Turn must be done.
