I guess the CDL schools are telling drivers they have to get a restart when they hit thier 70 hours,i have ran into several drivers that were taking 34 hour restarts in the middle of the week, and they would have picked up 11 hours at midnight. No wonder these people are complaining about not making any money. I am on the road 3 weeks at a time and never get a restart,i watch my recap and plan accordingly,if i only have 3 hours to run,I ask for a load that will run me 3 hours. Most companies will love it because noone wants to do short hauls, they need the 1500 mile runs every trip. I have rescued more loads from a large power only outfit (Greatwide) because the driver had to do a restart.I guess thats just the way it is now.I am the last of a dying breed.
Why do drivers not know how to run a recap anymore?

Why can't they do basic math? The calculator does it for them. They don't have to know how to do any thinking anymore. Drivers that are doing 34s when they are going to pick up 11 don't want to work. And thats ok, I have no problem taking your miles!!!

What about us driver's who burn up their 70 in 4 or 5 days?
A 34 hour restart is quicker to get them to wait 3 days for the hours to recycle on the recap.luvmyhubby, zentrucking, Injun and 6 others Thank this. -
Depends on how you run your logbook. If you go charging around full-blast, 11-hours a day, you're going to be doing resets regularily - and you probably need the rest too. OTOH, 8 or 9 hours a day will have you rolling your hours over on a recap basis.
Just depends - but if you don't know how to do that recap, you're going to be leaving $$$ on the table. -
For me, it depends on the load to determine how hard I push it. I don't sit specifically for a reset very often. However...there are times I get a few rush loads back to back, run out most of my 70 in six days and have to sit. But when I've run out my 70, I also have over 3,500 miles behind me. My paycheck will look just fine and I get a day off.
It's completely situatonal for me.Everett, goldwing daddy, lilillill and 3 others Thank this. -
Very few drivers are capable of operating a simple calculator and understanding the results. If they really could, do you think they would keep hauling 90 cents per mile freight?

They are also too lazy to bother. It takes too long for them to do. Like the extra 30 seconds makes a difference. Personally, when I pull in for a Level 3 inspection and they open my log book up and first thing they see is a recap, all goes much nicer.

I have not done a recap in years. It was only because the company wanted it.
Never went over the 70 because I mentally kept track.grimesjm1 Thanks this.
