Good luck Mamabear. Have you decided where to go for school?

Yes I have decided. I looked at both schools in my area and decided on dakota county technical college for a couple of reasons. They have a 3 mile course right on school grounds for max safety until I'm ready for the open road and they also have what they call a "slick pad" that they ice up in the winter to teach the anti-jack knifing and roll prevention; they also have special trailers that will lock up brakes and such for that kind of practice. Those two things I thought were important to sway me to that school instead of the one in Eagan. Looks like I will start December 6th and graduate on January 28, 2011.
I'm getting really excited for it to start!

My advise is to go get a DOT physical done first, that way you will know if your med situation disqualifies you. Besides if you get your Medical Card its one more thing out of the way of your becoming employed:mwink:

    MaMa Bear Thanks this.

Thank you ChopperDave for that sage advice. I did contact the school nurse and she explained that if my doctor will write a letter stating that my meds won't hamper my consciousness level and I can prove they have been prescribed for me by a physician, I'm in the clear!
I do plan on having my physical very soon for sure.
    Thanks again!

Thank you Kinghunter! I'm studying everyday for my permit tests, working with vocational rehab and dislocated worker people at unemployment for funding, and trying to corral my doctor into writing the necessary letter to add to my medical file so I can get my medical card.
Its been kind of crazy but soooooo worth it.
Thank you for the encouragement, I need it!

The Challenger and shriner75 Thank this.

    Mama,

If you are on meds that do not affect your driving, your doctor will write you a note and the worries will be taken off your shoulder. I was in that boat in December and that school gave me a list a of meds. Not sure if your school does the same but its worth a shot. And if they do not, they should so others will not get denied a DOT physical.

Thank you for the well wishes Kinghunter!

I put in a lot of thought into the school I will be attending. This school has 40 years under its belt and has a anti-jack knifing and accident avoidance training course complete with a slick pad that they ice up in the winter to help with the process.

I'm also working with two different agencies to get full funding of my school and fuel to get me back and forth to class.

I can't wait to get started! I will keep all informed as to my progress. Thank you for being interested!

I took that one step further and called the college nurse to talk about the drug test and procedures. She told me as long as I do all that is proper, I won't have any problems! That relieved a lot of pressure off of my shoulders and helped me be very positive about this lengthy process I will have to go through to get all my ducks in a row. So worth it though.
