Shipping Dept. in a cabinet factory for 9 months. Auto repair facility / auto body / trailer sales / trailer manufacturing / tow truck operator, all at the same place. Then 4 years of school where I somehow managed to get a job teaching three classes. Then I graduated with a four year degree and I got a job working on and driving trucks, buses, and anything else that has an engine and a gear selector. Like the job, dislike the people I have to deal with.
what did you do before becoming a driver?

Spent five years in retail doing various jobs ranging from working in a gas station to unloading trucks. In addition I was a p/t college student working on my AA and could not stand sitting in a office let alone a classroom for two-three hrs at a time. Now I volunteer with mentally handicap people who ride horses for therapy and volunteer at a local Humane Societies low cost neuter/spay clinic.
I plan on returning to the road soon.

Sailor for 20 years. Figure a sleeper is about the same size as a navy rack (bunk), and can't sleep on a "normal" bed anymore...it scares me too much room.

I was a surveyor for the Department of Transportation. Got laid off and went straight to truck driving school. Best decision I ever made. Drove OTR for 3 years. Currently at a community college about to get an Associates degree then my plans are to get back into trucking. Atleast Ill have a degree if I ever need it...

I was a rocket scientist until my lab blew up. I had to have brain surgery and of couse I had to be awake throughtout the whole procedure. So I had to listen to the surgeons talking during the whole thing. The first hour the doctor said there was alot of damage and it was a shame that this guy will never do what he was trained to do. The other doctor asked what can he do. And the main surgeon said it looks like there might be enough to where he can still be in rocketry. Then he said OH NO there's more than what I thought. He just might not have any sense at all. Then what will he do. Just a minute, ok I got it he can be a truck driver.

I was an auto technician for the last 20 years. After being let go from my last job, I realized that I was burned out and did not want to go back. I actually realized that a few years ago but wasnt ambitious at the time to find a new career. After I got let go, I started looking at other things I could do for around the same amount of money. A career that did not require me to goto school for the next 8 years just to get an entry level 10 buck an hour job and have it cost me an arm and a leg. Trucking is what I came up with and what I feel will be a good fit =)
