exhaust manifold

I'd think you would loose some boost/power/mileage.

As long as the exhaust is not blowing on anything sensitive probably won't hurt a thing.

I would however be concerned about the long term affects of exposure to carbon monoxide. If you start seeing things/falling asleep/can't remember where you are it might be time to roll down the windows! Isn't CM exposure is cumulative? You don't have any respiratory problems yet?

 

rosy cheeks is a good sign of cm poisoning.

If DOT detects it they can red flag you for it, and park your tail till its repaired.

I think your looking at a new manifold. Short of it being a custom modern exhaust, the cast iron does not do well when repaired. It can be done, but any DOT will see it and go nuts because it is there. Replace it.

 

make sure of what they intend to do for the repair. weld up the crack, or replace it with either a new one or used one.

the price may be right, depending on today's shop labor charges.

welding of exhaust manifolds was done (in the automotive business) as i had then a great welding shop to take work to. sometimes i'd have a "poor customer" that could not afford even a good used manifold. a very good shop can make quick work of this, however, that's not to say a crack cannot develop in another area later. you take your chances with welding the crack.

 

I crack in the manifold can cause the exhaust valve face to crack off, If the cylinder stops on overlap you get cold air coming in the crack. the chances of it doing it are very slim but still a possibility.
You can not weld it, I have seen it tried many times, and never works.

You can always get a new manifold. Either stock or an upgraded one from Full Tilt or Pittsburgh Power.

 

The problem with trying to weld cast iron, is that the cast iron during the pour contains graphite. When you try to weld, the graphite gets drawn into the molten puddle causing pinholes in the weld. There is a way to stir the graphite out but you need to be wicked experienced for it. Any one can weld CI, its a very few that can weld it and not have problems.

 

Best to replace bad manifold.

 

its common for the center section manifold to crack in the international and freightliner chassis. your high pressure turbo should also have a crack on the turbine housing in which the turbine housing or the turbo has to be replaced.
