First I would like to say hello to everyone on this board. I am new to trucking in school now and will be on the road soon.

Not sure if there is a thread on this or not so if so I apologize.

So wanting my truck to be like home I know I want T.V. and the net.

I've heard Dish network have a cube that can pick up signal and doesn't need to be aimed. I also hear its pricey at 3900 bucks.

Does anyone have this? Or know about it? Can it be used to get Dish internet?

I plan to call Dish net work to ask there reps but thought it best to ask other truckers who may tried this already. Hate to spend big bucks on something that doesn't work.

It is called a Vuqube & chances are there is no company that will allow you to mount it on their trucks.

As for internet, it will be cheaper just to go to your cell phone carrier & buy a air card & a $60 a month subscription.

We are currently in the process of getting a portable dish, and satellite subscription for our truck.

At this point, we are just researching, trying to find the least expensive company. I think we have found one, but the main problem is, finding the time off to get anywhere long enough to get it activated.

I have a 5gig air card for my laptop, but watching TV or movies on it eats up that 5 gigs quick, and in a hurry, leaving me with no space left to do other things on my laptop, so I don't use it for watching anything.

i was looking at a dish--but i think you would have to sit alot to make it worthwhile--its easier and cheaper to have somebody burn some movies for you and just watch that--or read a good book--not sure in us --but if you get to toronto--you can get movies sometimes even before they hit the screen--sometimes the quality is a bit iffy--but usually it is ok--some movies are $1 some brand new ones &5---think i bought the deadwood series for 12 and sopranos for 20

Hey, anytime we sit loading/unloading for two hours or more, I will stick that dish outside and watch!! LOL ( I'm a TV addict...mostly A&E, TLC, Food Network,Discovery, Animal Planet, Bones, all Law & Order, all CSI....ok, OKAY!! I'm a TOTAL TV addict!!! LOL)

Barring that, since I AM on the truck....anyone wanna buy some books? Or I'll give 'em away!! I have like, 40 books on the truck, and I keep accumulating more by the day!! :biggrin_2556:

I read alot, obviously, and I play games on my laptop, and we also have a game system on the truck.

But, I still want my TV! :biggrin_25521: :biggrin_2559:

Get a SlingBox on your home tv and watch anything you get at home on your computer in the truck.:biggrin_25525:

Slingbox ain't going to work. All the aircards are limited to a certain amount of data. There's a company called millenicom that sells an unlimited card, but it still says right in the fine print if you use it too much, they will take action. Even still, it's going to buffer a lot on a 3g connection in most places.

I use a Sprint aircard for internet, which probably isn't the best choice since Verizon has better coverage. I have a 7 inch portable tv and use rabbit ears. When you are in town, you can usually pick up a dozen or so channels. I also rent DVDs a lot out of Redbox. You can find them at any Walmart and most Mcdonald's, for $1 a night. I usually grab 4 or 5 of them at a time, and rip them to my hard drive for later viewing, then return them before I leave the parking lot. I erase them after viewing, of course! ;)

    Judy Kay....

That vuQube has a set up that can keep the signal while your traveling down the highway. I just thought I'd help with your TV addiction.

I have about 300 dvds in the truck and growing. They take up about 2/3's of the top bunk tray. Local TV is good enough for me. Big cities you get 30-40 channels.
I like the judge shows, COPS and Two and Half Men and a few others.

It seems its not worth the time to set the dish up. Maybe for restarts. If I did do it, I would use one of the home receivers ($5 more) and have an expandable pole sitting in the load lock tray. Tuning one in is a breeze. I use to install them. I have a digistat just for that purpose. But you can use the beeper on the receiver.

Some apts I did installs they weren't allowed a dish mounted anywhere. We resolved that by mounting a short pole in a 5 gallon bucket of concrete they could set on their deck. That could work in a truck but I like the load lock tray idea better.

Dish internet is through Hughes, a division of DirectTV. The dish for that is big and bulky. Not practical for a truck. I limit internet pretty much to truck stops, so I use the truck stops internet for $19.99 a month.
