I am a new driver and Canadian.
I have never set foot in the States but I realise that if I am going to work OTR then I will have to pretty soon. I know that a lot of you guys dont want Canadians running over the border but honestly do you hate us or just tolerate us?
Do you really believe that we steal jobs?
My image of the States comes from T.V therefore I have no realistic concept of what to expect.
Should I expect ignorent remarks/attitudes or are we welcomed with open arms? How am I expected to behave?
Whenever I go down to my nearest truckstop (10acres, Belleville) I reckon there must be 10% American registered trucks in there.
For what it's worth I really couldnt care less about driving in the States, it's just a job to me and my opinion about American drivers being in Canada is just about the same. If a guy or gal wants to work hard at a shxty job then I wouldnt want to stop them.

Treat other drivers the way you want to be treated. I have run back and forth into the US, heard some drivers whine about us stealing their jobs. These are the same drivers that WILL NOT run into Canada and have no idea what to do if they had to anyway. We do not do point to point in the US and they do not do point to point here.
Some US only drivers do not fully understand what we do when we take a load over. Pick up a new load and bring it back. They figure that since they see a Canadian truck then we are taking their freight. I have met more US drivers that do not want to nor can cross the border to bring loads in to Canada.
You can expect ignorant remarks on BOTH sides of the border. That is the meaning of ignorant, some just do not know nor even care to educate themselves.
In the end we ALL do the same job and have the same frustrations. Some narrow minded ignoramus should not get on your nerves. That being said, I have met LOADS of friendly and helpful brothers in the US. It seems you'll hear more whining on the CB as lots of folks won't speak up in person. It is easy to talk tough over a CB (or the Internet for that matter), in person it is a different story.
Get your FAST card, teach yourself the US HOS regs. Once you cross past that UN flag on the bridges/buildings you are running under a totally different set of rules. If you have questions about the HOS feel free to PM me. I've yet to be fined or fail a safety audit on my logs. I just hope it stays that way with all new regs coming out.bobcaygeonjohn Thanks this. -
And go home. I have made it clear to ALL of the employers I've worked for (including Watkins Shepard which supposedly required me to under flatbed) that I won't ply my trade outside my native country. There you have it. You serve a great purpose in my opinion.

I'm an American. I've run with Canadians up and down I-5, with Canadians from Sacramento to Brampton, and with Canadians in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Not one of my trucking northern neighbors was anything but good people. Not one of them ever said anything about feeling unwelcome in The States and I never felt unwelcome or resented in Canada (not even in Quebec even though I don't speak French!), though I was told (by Americans) that you guys hated us guys, which turned out to be bull****.
Hey, you folks are just like us folks, except we gave you Bob Dylan and you gave us Joni Mitchell and Ian Tyson and Lightfoot and Bruce Coburn (thank you!). And your money is prettier! And you've got some dynamite scenery!
"Job stealing"? Horsepucky.
You don't have a thing to worry about and you're more than welcome here. Safe trip.Haze and bobcaygeonjohn Thank this. -

I've never in 32 years of trucking ever heard any badmouthing from American drivers about Canadians. Think of it from a practical standpoint. A Canadian picks up a load in Canada that delivers in Kansas, for instance. Then, he picks up a load in that area heading back to Canada. NAFTA rules opened the borders between Can/USA/Mex for inter-commerce back in the '90s. I'm sure it all evens out.

the Quebians. I had the DOT at Echo in UT tell me Frenchies came in and made I no speak English and he let them go out of pure frustration. Free Pass! Could I do that in Quebec? No!!!!!

well--if you have never heard any bad mouthing --you had better turn on your cb--not complaining but everybody gets bad mouthed on cb--
but generally everybody i meet are great people---seems to better the further south you go as well--on the same story i have heard us drivers getting crao on cb--in calgary--it was really bad--but it was probabely just rig pigs on the pavement for a day, before heading back in the bush
