What are you gonna do about guys like me that are very large framed?
When I graduated high school I weighed 245 and had almost "0" body fat and now at 55 I weigh 285 and have a more body fat than I did when I got out of high school but not too much more!
My Doc. told me that I ought to weigh 180 and I just laughed at him and told him he was nuts! I told him that I was a very large boned person and he said that there wasn't that much difference in the thickness of peoples bones...Again I just laughed at him.
I asked him "What size ring do you wear?" He wears a size 8 ring, I wear a size 16 1/2 ring! and I have worn the same size ring since I was in high school and I don't have any fat in my fingers!
If I get down to 265 I'm as lean as I have ever been in my life and if I get below 265 I start looking like there's something wrong with me...
There are some things that can't be avoided when it comes to weight but there are some things that can....
If you're the guy in the big ol' shorts with the purple calves and your belly hangin' out from under your T-Shirt walkin' through the parking lot eatin' a donut and carrying a 5,000 ounce soda back to your truck after grazing at the buffet for an hour...
Don't tell me that your weight problem is hormonal because if you do...I'm gonna laugh in your face!

Wait a minute...
Because a driver is obese, he/she cannot be "healthy, awake, safety conscious, responsible, clean/presentable and just puts out a more professional appearance"? I've seen some pretty nasty looking height-weight appropriate drivers out there...
I'll buy the insurance angle of this, but not the marketing aspect. -
large framed, me too and for a ton of folks out there as well. if you're "fat", stop complaining and make healthier choices plain and simple......what we did did was offer programs similar to what you would get in a standard 9-5 and extended to our drivers.... smoking cessation programs, gym memberships, food discounts or free meals along routes that we knew offered healthier choices etc etc. believe it or not, there are tax advantages as well to offer such programs to employees, but it takes $$$ to find and research them to ensure it is of benefit
AfterShock Thanks this. -
You make a good point, w900. I've lost and regained a lot of weight over the years. At one time, I weighed 120 pounds and you could count my ribs, my skin was draped over my hip bones, and I looked like something from a concentration camp. Yet, 120 pounds was "normal" for my height.
I'm 5' 5-1/2" inches tall. The last time I lost weight, my doctor advised me to stop losing at 160 pounds. I looked and felt good. My employer, however, was concerned -- at 160 pounds -- that I was perhaps a bit on the "too thin" side.
So there's a lot of validation to you point, w900. I'm glad you posted.
NOTE: That does not, however, excuse my current weight. I'd LOVE to see 160 pounds again! -
And ya know what... I agree completely with you. BMI is a stupid, one-size fits all standard - but it is an objective standard that is easily expressed. For a lot of folks, a high BMI describes someone very overweight. For others, not so much.
I first encountered BMI in the military. There was a fella over in the ECM shop who was 6'-something, worked out daily, and weighed over 265. Not an ounce of fat on that man's frame - extremely fit. He was constantly on the over-weight program! So it doesn't always work.
If you are overweight because of fat, it behooves you to loose it. Its not so much a problem until you start hitting 40 and 50 with that extra weight. Then you start getting into medical complications that can't necessarily be remedied by just loosing some - a lot of the problems are there to stay. Our lifestyle compounds those problems - so its just better to deal with it when you're younger. -
If you want to work at McDonald's their rule is you pull your long hair up. If you don't want to do what the employer wants, to be employed then you don't get the job. How bad do you want the job?

I rest my case.

What case is that? -
