I listen to Road Dog almost every day to and from work - even though I'm not a trucker - I often hear drivers saying they are not educated like politicians and that the public looks down on them - but i think they know a lot more than they give themselves credit for - and a lot more than most politicians and the general public has a clue about - I've been hearing a lot of complaints about regulation, taxes, fines etc. and about plans to open the Mexican border - Maybe it's time for a nationwide truckers strike to get the message out that we don't want the border opened? Strikes have worked in the past - it's a matter of economics 101 - if the economy starts to suffer - or a mom can't buy diapers or milk or the mail doesn't get delivered or contruction projects get held up or gasloine doesn't get delivcered to stations- people will take notice and negotiations will open up - and while you're at it maybe you ought to ban shipping of goods made in China and maybe this will encourage business growth in the US and the economy will finally start to turn itself around - it may hurt in the short run but the benefits will far outweigh the costs
Why Not Strike?

I'm all for banning shipments from China. However it should start with the public and go after those big corporations that purchase goods from China.
Lets start with Walmart. Nobody shops at Walmart any more. -
In principal I agree. A 3 day strike would bring the whole of North America to it's knees. Once the stores run out of fresh bread and fuel starts to get low ..... Anarchy!
But do you know what would happen in the long run? Public sympathy would be non existant and the border to the south of us would be opened up double quick. -
There is no public sympatyh for truckers today so who cares.
Having said that most of the public today does not understand the hardship that truckers go through to deliver their loads.
If we go on strike and explain all that goes on I'm sure they would be more sympathetic. They would be on our side for a few days and if the trucks don't start moving they their sympathy to truckers is out of the door. -
A strike to keep the Mexican Carriers out
Yes let's cut available American Carriers and that will make them see
And Americans had their chance to "boycott" (insert third world country) products. They chose to buy the cheapest they could so they could buy more stuff. Corporations that attempted to stay US based either moved their operations or closed.
The American consumer voted with his wallet
Now they can reap the rewards of that decision
zentrucking Thanks this. -
Much of that falls on the shoulders of our politicians who set up the worst trade policies imaginable...We made light bulbs here since Edison invented them, now the Chinese do it all as the last GE plant closed recently(IIRC)...bluebonn Thanks this.

Seems basic enough to me. Employee; "I want MORE $$$/benefits/vacations etc." Employer; "We want to stay in business and make a profit". Hence, jobs/manufacturing going overseas.
-
Walmart buys stuff that sells, they don't use it themselves. If folks didn't buy the Chinese-made goods, Walmart would not buy it. You're barking up the wrong tree.zentrucking Thanks this.

If that were true ... there would be no discussions about job loss, and truckers strikes.
-
why pick on walmart, go to ANY store the same products are there usually at a higher price so you support the same overseas producer you just pay even more to do it.
