    Not sure of the reg number but the way it reads now is if you're splitting sleeper time your first entry can be no less than 8 hours. If less than 8 hours your 14 hr clock does NOT stop.

    I didn't say less than 8 hours did. My interpretation is right according to the DOT. I had the same argument with someone else. It doesn't matter which comes first as long as you don't exceed the 14 hour rule. You can pick it apart break by break over a week. This interpretation stood up to scrutiny after an accident, BTW.

    This HOS thing at first glance seemed simple, On duty/Drive 14/11, Sleeper 10 hrs, repeat up to 70 hrs; but when throwing split sleeper in there, I get confused. Please give an example of when or how I can use the 8/2 split.

    Like I said we are forced to run E logs and the way it works on the peoplesnet is.. You work 5 hours take a 2 hour break ... then you run the remainder of your hours out.. and take an 8 hour break.. THE COMPUTER ONLY ALLOWS YOU THE 5 HOURS BEFORE YOUR FIRST BREAK!!!... I can't argue it or creative plan it is what it is..

    You'll do what you have to do do to take care of your family. It's as simple as that. The longest I've driven in one shot is 35 hours, (Mohave,Ca. To Elkhart,In.) We do what we have to!

    Same with 3/7 6/4 ect? Seriously are you suggesting you run 6/4 or 3/7, that is not a legal break
    read this..


    • 1. Exceeding 11 Hours Driving Time: No driver shall drive more than 11 hours following at least 10 consecutive hours off duty.
    • 2. Continuous Sleeper Berth Provision: At least 10 consecutive and uninterrupted hours in the sleeper berth.
    There are actually 4 options for obtaining the 10 consecutive hours off:

    • One would be the 10 continuous hours off duty, unbroken by any other activity
    • The second would be 10 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth, unbroken by any other activity
    • The third would be the sleeper berth provision explained below
    • The fourth would be the 10 consecutive hours of combined sleeper berth/off duty time, unbroken by any on duty time or driving time.
    Sleeper Berth Provision:

    • The equivalent of at least 10 consecutive hours off-duty (equivalent means 2 rest periods, one of which must be at least 8 but not more than 10 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth, the other of which must be at least two consecutive hours which can be off duty, sleeper berth or a combination of the two
      When using the sleeper berth provision, one rest period must be at least 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth, the other rest period must be at least 2 consecutive hours which can be off duty, sleeper berth or a combination of the two.
    EXAMPLE: a driver can drive 6 hours take the 8-consecutive hours in the sleeper and then drive 5 hours & then take the 2 consecutive hours which can be off duty or sleeper, but must be consecutive.



    One of your sleeper berth times must be at least 8 that means all that other crap we use to do isn't valid..
    as far as splitting the sleeper time this will help the newbies...

    for those who are ok with bending the rules, it seems like it would make sense to never log "off duty" but rather to log "sleeper berth" instead, since 8hrs of sleeper berth can extend your hours but off duty cannot. Otherwise, they are identicle in purpose with regard to controlling when you can drive. I guess this might look suspicious to a DOT person but how can they argue that you weren't sleeping?

    Yep you are correct.. It doesn't pay to go onto line 1.. Hell if I know I am going to be at a vendor for over 2 hours I go in the sleep on the E LOG and if it doesn't take 2 hours it puts me on line 1 its self.. Our lying has just gotten high tech now. I wonder why the FMCSA doesn't ask drivers for input.. Like I said earlier .. I drive tired (but legal) more now than back in the day where I was illegal but well rested...
