Don't give your hard earned money! Give food if their sign says "I'm Hungry".

I was getting off at my exit, saw this man holding a sign, no traffic behind me so popped the brakes and grabbed a can of poptop soup and a sealed in plastic clean spoon and handed it to him.

Other times when taking my exit for fuel and see a LOL (little old lady) holding the hungry sign, I get my fuel and meal but will buy an extra cheeseburger and hand it to her on my way back to the interstate.

When you are around your town see if the local city or county government has converted some parking meters to help the homeless and to prevent aggressive panhandling (yea, right) ...

Of course, this is not going to be seen at T/S's but if you feel the need to do something with your spare change during your home time, etc.; this is a better solution than just turning it over to someone who will immediately go get more alcohol and drugs, etc.

I give money if I am entertained in some way.

Had a guy holding a sign at the end of the Walmart parking lot back home: "My parakeet needs a triple bypass" I gave him five bucks for making me laugh.

Another guy standing outside a Taco Bell with a sign: "Visions of a cheeseburger" He got a couple bucks for the giggle.

Years ago, back in my single days living in the barracks with no real bills I was at walmart I saw a women crouched down talking to her daughter and heard her asking her daughter if she wanted "a nice Christmas dinner, or a toy" the daughter asked why she couldn't have both. The mom said because her job didn't pay enough for her to be able to afford both. I went and got a $100.00 walmart giftcard and gave it to her. It was a sight watching her breakdown in the middle of Walmart thanking me. After the young lady recomposed her self, I found out her husband had been hurt in an accident and was paralayzed from the waist down, and her job as a sectary with his disability benifits from the state didn't leave them with enough for "frills". When she found out I lived in the barricks, she invited me over for xmas dinner. One of the best meals I've had. It was really great hearing the daugher talk about the Barbie house that was sitting on there door step that morning, she said Santa must of dropped it when leaving to visit the next kid.

I guess they fell in that gray area alot of people do, make too much (or have to much pride) for govt programs, but are barely makeing it. I won't give cash to anyone that asks for it, but I like to do little things as others have mentioned, buy a meal pay for gas and very rarely do I let them know I did it. (gift cards for 7-11 and walmart are good)

Well we didn't really get screwed or anything, but when I worked for EMS me and my partner picked up a Mexican guy on the side of the road suffering from hypothermia. We took him into the ER and they warmed him up and fed him and were going to send him back out in the bitter cold with a pair of jeans and a wind breaker. He had come from Indiana and was trying to get to Texas when his vehicle broke down so he had been hopping trains and walking. H went to sleep that night under a bridge, hence his condition. He had a letter from a company that was going to hire him when he got to Texas. Ok Ok whatever, didn't believe it for a bit, but we took him to Wal-Mart to at least get him a coat and gloves. The manager donated a big coat nice gloves 3 pairs of jeans and sweat shirts, winter boots and a sleeping bag...I was impressed. Me and my partner were going to stick him in a motel for the night to help him out, but the manager there donated the room and and the truckstop worker next door found him a ride to Texas. Months later the director brings us a letter from the guy, he paid his ambulance bill in full, sent a donation for EMS, and extra money to take to Wal-mart and the motel, who in turn said they didn't expect anything back from him and sent their money to the local food bank.
I rarely try to help anyone that I don't know cause theres too many ######## in the world to sort out, but something about this guy screamed sincere.
