From my point of view they do. In my current position, I report to my yard at
5:00 am (when I was a G.M. for Bob Evans it was the same) you get used to a early schedule after awhile. I only work with one other driver. All of our
business with the company in Warren Michigan is done by phone or Nextel.
We only see "bosses" once every three or four months.
Positives:
You are responsible for only you! You don't have to try to motivate, counsel, etc.. in my case at some points in my food career, up to 180 employees.
You will see this at stops, managers arguing with employees about not shaving, lates, tardies, blah, blah, blah.
If you manage a very busy kitchen or restaurant, you know it is very physical, on your feet 10-12 hours a day, the heat of the kitchen etc...
Physical is about the same, more heavy lifting. You may put away your delivery when Sysco brings it in and you know that is work. On a truck
you have your finger prints on every single item in that truck. I run between 386 pieces to 451.
On a truck, you start early and running 10-11 stops I can finish my day by 5:00 or 6:00 pm after paperwork. In a restaurant you may have to work late, some times very late hours 10:00-11:00 pm sometimes. If you have kids you won't see them that much. I missed both of my kids growing up because as a G.M. with Bob Evans I worked all the time. You can at least see your family in the evening for awhile.
If I were you, I would follow what your "heart" tells you to do. Many local companies have a hard time finding guys anymore that want to do the hard work. I don't usually do this but since you may be curious about local financial, in MY case I bring home around $980.00 per week. I was making that every two weeks at my last food service job. But again, my whole body aches but the money is very good. You need to investigate and make a choice that is good for you and your family.
Happy Easter!

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
I think I want to be a TRUCK DRIVER!?!?
