My (soon to be) wife and I are considering becoming team drivers beginning next summer at the earliest. So we decided to start doing the research now and seeing if it is the right move for us. Since we're just starting our research and are completely inexperienced, we don't know where to begin, but I'll start with some basics about us:
We love being together, and are rarely apart unless we have to be. We love driving, and those long road trips. We do our best work as a team. We are courteous and respectful. We are very patient and slow to anger... though she does have a bit of a mouth when dealing with stupid drivers on the road. The idea of living out of a tractor for weeks at a time doesn't scare us. The biggest reason we're considering this is combined earning potential with minimum overhead (we'd put our stuff in storage, and stay with family during our "home time").

What we'd like from you all is honest information. Preferably from other husband/wife teams, but any honest advice will do.

What should we look for in a school? ... in a company? Are there any outfits that will let us train together after school? What sorts of things should we ask recruiters? What kind of drive/sleep rotation is common for teams? ... and any other questions that I can't think of right now.

What characteristics make a successful - and dare I say it, happy - driver/team? How much of this job/career is about attitude? What are some of the big and/or common red flags you see in this industry? When have you been the happiest while working? Why do you do it?

Thanks so much in advance for all of your input, and thanks also for the work that you do on the roads for us, our families, and our country!

If your wife has anger issues, she needs to leave them at home.

You are going to be seeing lots of stupid stuff out there; people will give you the bird, cut you off and blow the horns all day long, it seems some days.

You gotta learn to let it go. You aint driving a car, so dont drive a rig like a car driver. Sure, you can get upset sometimes, but doing so is distracting and can cuase you to get in an accident.

Let the fools go on down the road and stay safe and making lots of $$$, is what I say.

I could go on but that has to be addressed by you and your wife before you get into a team driving partnership on the road. My .02 cents.

My wife and I drove team and loved it! We also made really, really good money. It's not all roses though and it is extremely hard work! Most companies expect you to run about 1000 miles a day. Husband/wife teams are the cream of the crop though and you will be treated like gold! I recommend a good medium sized company. Stay away from the mega-carriers. As far as schooling goes they are pretty much all the same and they are just there to teach you the basics and get you ready for training. So don't worry about school selection too much. Company schools are fine too. No money up front. Start doing your research now. Make a list of your wants and needs and start looking at different companies. You may even want to call them up to see what they have to offer and maybe who might be interested in training you guys together. Good luck, check out my profile and you can see some of our adventures together.

I got into trucking to get AWAY from my wife. I couldn't imagine getting into a truck with a woman 24/7. That's just me though. for the most part I couldn't be in a truck with a guy or woman.

I took a trip with a girlfriend once from Arkansas to Wisconsin and back. I was ready to jump out the the truck and have it roll over me before we got back and we were only gone 3 days!!!!

I like being alone. I love the freedom trucking gives me. I have never liked having a boss screaming in my ear or walking two steps behind me waiting for me to make a mistake. Maybe this is part of why I like being solo in the truck.

That being said. I know some do it and love it. Some do it and wish that they had made other decisions. My advice would be to just take a couple of trips together to "test" it out.

I used to ride on the truck with my bro-in-law back when I was a teenager and I loved it. He said it didn't bother him for me to ride with him either. Maybe it will work out. You just have to think. You will be in a box that is around 5' by 7' for weeks on end together with very little alone time. If that sounds good to both of you and you both have that understanding BEFORE you do it, then it might work.

You wont have a lot of choices starting out as far as who you drive for. The big 5 as the drivers call them or the bottom feeder companies. Stick it out for a year and then move on to a better carrier.

Save your money and eat in the truck as much as possible, hopefully you'll be able to have a fridge or a cooler in the truck. A meal in the restaurants for 2 will be at least $25-30.

Trucking recruiters get paid to get you signed up, keep that in mind as you speak with them.

The companies do differ as far as what extras you can have in a truck, such as inverters, microwaves, ect.

The best of luck to the two of you .

Thanks so much for the input so far.
I have thought of another question though. Are any husbands concerned for the safety of their wives? I've read lots of horror stories about truck stops at night...

AMEN to all of that, driver!!

IMO, if a person are a real "people person" , you most likely wont pan out as a driver in the long run. If a person can't be alone with no one they know, for a few days or weeks, OTR driving is not for those kinds of people,
    man or woman.

Being too close can wreck a marriage, just as much as too much time away can. Trucking is one of the worst industries to work in, for breaking up a couple, as far as I can tell.

    My .02 cents.
