Hey guys.... can anyone tell me what the water pressure minimum and maximums are for the above listed Cat. It's a 2001 model. Tks.
Cat 3406E 6nz water/coolant pressure

I'm not sure about max. limit, but usually coolant pressure low code is stored when engine temperature is higher ~90 dgr C and pressure is lower 0.5 bar... It is test for closed coolant tank cap ore coolant leak.
I do not know about 3406E coolant pressure sensor, but I see them on DEEC-V and ISX. -
If you're talkin about water pump pressure i believe its roughly 15psi
-
Thanks. What I am talking about is the maximum amount of PSI built up when normal operating temperature is 190 degrees. CAT also says it should have a minimum PSI of 10. That is what I have heard. Just installed new water pump and reading 13 PSI. CAT guy seems to think 13 is too high and says I could have possible blown head gasket or air compressor. Friends tell me 13 PSI is ok.

maximum pressure is limited with radiator cap. else radiator may blow overheated a bit.
Moving on Down the Road Thanks this. -
Are you asking about the radiator preasure cap, that must be 7 lbs and can be 16.
The water pump preasure is the preasure the pump itself produces. What I would do is remove the heater hose from the top of the engine and put in an adapter to a preasure gauge. With the rad cap on run the unit at 1800 RPM and I could not find the exact specs but from memory if you do not have 27 lbs steady there is a problem shut it off and the preasure on the gauge you deduct from the reading that is the water pump preasure.
The water pump covers corrode, from poor additives, and the water pump impellers wear from lack of a water filter, and the impellers slip on a 3400 series. -
Hey John..... right now the truck is sitting at Cat dealer. Water pump went out so replaced it. Primarily the water pump doesn't create much water pressure but instead just keeps it circulating. The pressure I'm talking about is the pressure built up in the whole coolant system as the water temp rises and the water reaches the 190 degree normal operating temp. It's the same theory as boiling a pot of spaghetti. As it heats up, pressure builds in the pot and eventually lifts the lid up off the pot and runs all over your stove. When Cat dealer got done, they put a pressure guage on top of the radiator where the cap would be. After about 5 minutes of idle, they said it was showing 13 psi. They seem to feel 13 psi is too high and indicates that I could have a blown head gasket or bad air compressor. Friends have told me that 13 is okay and not to worry about it. I did read where when rebuilding a 3406, it must have at least 10 psi to operate properly. On a good tight coolant system, the truck can sit for a week and will still make the pressure release sound when you remove the radiator cap since it basically creates a sort of vacuum after you shut the motor down and it cools. This is a 2001 3406 475 hp 6nz model and pre Asert era. I'm just trying to figure is dealer is trying to get me to spent more money for something I really don't need or if I'm facing a real expense for putting on a new head gasket. Tks...

did you have mistery coolant loss? no leak, but coolant dissapears....
-
No mystery coolant loss. While driving down the road, the water temperature gauge began to drop to 100 degrees. At the same time the oil temperature began to rise. I knew it was the water pump and that water was not circulating through motor. The cool night air made the standing water in the radiator cool down. The oil temp went up because the coolant was not passing through the engine. Also, water pump on CAT has a weep hole which will leak whebn pump is bad. Thanks.

Sounds like Cat is needing some extra work.
