I remember back around '94 I had been driving on my own for about a month for the pumpkin and I got sent to 14th street and 9th ave. Imagine my terror. I still have nightmares. One thing I can say about the myths though is true. Soon as I got in the city a nice black dude on a bicycle asked me where I needed to go....he said "follow me"...and I did. He got me right where I needed to go. I gave him $20 and felt it was well worth it. The next 8 hours were what sucked. Backing a 53' trailer into darness under a skyscaper...having to unhook from the trailer just so traffic could get by...teamsters unloading me...no satellite coverage to msg in.....all with about a month of solo driving under my belt. Good luck to ya...but its just not for me.
Bell_Diver Thanks this. -
What's the big deal? I went to truck driving school (Model Driving School - motor cycle/car/bus/truck) that was on 14th Street between 6th + 7th Ave in the city. Trying driving back to the front of the school w/a pos Ford tractor pulling a 48' city trailer (12'6 height) on the first day during rush hours.

I bought a GMC daycab that I am going to pick up in NYC (near the airport) and take to Florida. I haven't driven a semi since I was 21 years old (I'm 60 now). Best time of day to leave, roads to avoid, etc.
Thanks

get in and get out on a weekend. weekdays are hell. weekend is cake.

If you can do it at night then your chances of getting in and out of there quickly will be much better. Really depends on where you are going. One of the reasons for this is because at night there are a lot more cars parked on the streets and navigating turns and around cars is a lot tougher. If not at night and you have to go during the week then make your attack plans for just a hair after rush hour. This will allow you to get in and hopefully out before the lunch rush. Hopefully it won't be snowing when you go! Good luck!

Watch your route from the airport, don't take boulevards and parkways. The LEOs are out in force at light times, too, so watch your speed and lanes. Last time I was there, the locals were shooting bridge approaches and on curves in the dark.

Yeah, they do a lot of construction and detours at night too!

that is why I all ways try to attack at dawn on a saturday when everyone is sleeping in. Heck I even raced one of those 18 speed super condos down though the city one time. It was fun zipping past all the famous buildings my student was snapping pictures out the window as fast as he could click. Aww good times. Plus with attacking a dawn then I am normally out of there before anyone wakes up for the day. on the weekends that is.
