What's dumb about running 80 MPH?
Higher fuel consumption. Please don't try to BS me into thinking you get better fuel mileage at 80 then 65.
More wear on tires.
More wear on brakes.
Speeding tickets. In a 65 MPH or lower state it's reckless driving charge.
More stress on the driver which increases driver fatigue.
Increases braking distance.
Now you tell me the upside of running 80 MPH with facts not stories about a fictitious friend or friends that gets 30 MPG at 80 MPH and only 2 MPG at 60 MPH. -
I doubt it would do much good to tell you anything since you seem to know so much.
Also, the reasons you list are not convincing that it's 'dumb' to drive 80. I've expedited a load from Grand Island, NE to Dodge City, KS in about four hours because I could drive 80+. That was a big win for everybody and doesn't sound so 'dumb' to me.
I'm hard pressed to believe that. Unless a guy is pushing on the brake pedal and fuel pedal at the same time. -
You must be leaving out something important, like a hazmat or something. you don't believe me, do the math yourself. a CREngland solo driver that leases a truck there will make about 14-17 cents per mile, and using the facts stated before, I have triad, and I cannot make them numbers any better unless the driver has the title in his hands. and england has VERY few o/o's.

Mostly I've driven slow trucks. What's really freaking annoying is when mr 62.2 goes out to pass my 62 mph truck, I back off to get him out of the hammer lane, he gets by and then slows down to 60. Happens all the time.

A 300 mile trip within 4 hours puts you at a average speed of 75 MPH which means that you had to run 85 to 90 MPH for a maximum speed while slowing down in the five small towns with speed limits of 30 to 35 MPH and stop lights. 235 miles would have been on two lane roads with curves that you could not take at 55 MPH and slower traffic. The only way I will believe that you did this would be that you had time stamped paper work on both ends. IF you did this trip within four hours then how many other drivers did you tailgate or put at risk due to trying to do a stupid run like this? Hopefully this run paid extra for the expedited fast service and if it did then it was a win for all but the one with the greatest risk was you the driver. Shipper got his freight there on time, receiver got his freight and the trucking company got paid extra. You the driver took all of the risk. Did it pay you extra or only a pad on the back for being a hero? Would this run have paid you enough if you had got a reckless driving charge?
Please do a little research on the use of brakes and the affects that speed, temperature, weight and brake adjustments have on brake wear and stopping distance. It might save your life or others if understood how your brakes work on your truck. -
Happens at 68 too. What I don't get is why they felt the need to pass me if they wanted to go slower than I am.
Still, I'll take those any day over the ones that are going slower than you, until they realize that someone is passing them and speed up to match your speed so that you get stuck in the left lane. Best guess is that they didn't realize how slow they were going and the sight of your truck woke them up from their daze, since I have done that a few times myself, but at that point you need to realize that you put yourself in that situation and back off to let the passing truck complete their manuever. -
I had to back WAY off to let a set of triples in and follow him up a grade but I never for a MOMENT thought of re-passing him or leaving him out to drive.
I guess I bring a different sort of newbieism to this career.... -
when fuel,tires etc..... is more valuable then your time you are in the wrong gig
