I won't have time to monitor this thread but please, other drivers add to it as you see fit. It was suggested I copy this from my thread to here.
________________
This is something Ive been thinking about as I drive around this country and see some of the things folks in cars do out there. I wish I could put this on the back of every trailer I tow.
If 4 wheelers knew just this one thing, it might change how they see Big Rigs and how they drive around them.
If a Big Rig hits you it wont just slam into you like you see with cars. It WILL ROLL OVER YOU AND CRUSH YOU LIKE A BEER CAN!!
4 Wheelers, DONT BE A BEER CAN!!
It takes more than a football field to stop a fully loaded Tractor Trailer doing 55 on a FLAT DRY ROAD. When you pass us, DONT pull right back in front of us. If you hit your breaks suddenly we CANT Stop before CRUSHING YOU LIKE A BEER CAN.
When youre behind us and your exit is coming up, is it really worth risking your life (and the lives of others) to pass us and then dart across our bow to your exit to save .5 seconds?? Stay behind us for that half second longer and DONT BE A BEER CAN!!
When coming onto a highway LOOK AS YOU APPROACH for an open spot and adjust your speed accordingly. We cant always move over. Get off the dam phone and pay attention because when you come up on our side and drive under our Tandems, YOUVE JUST BECOME A BEER CAN!!
Youre always complaining about how slow our trucks are and yet youll pass us and then slow down. It takes a LONG time for us to get up to highway speeds when pulling 20 TONS on FLAT roads! Even longer on hills. Be patient because after all, were more than likely hauling the products youre rushing to the store to buy!
You may wonder why were doing 65 (or less) in a 70 or 75 MPH zone and even curse us for it when you cant get around us. MOST of our trucks are governed to those lowers speeds so we have no choice. We make our living by the mile. Do you really think we wouldnt go 70 or 75 when its safe to do so if we could???
When traveling or stopped behind us at a light, PLEASE dont get so close that you cant see our mirrors. If you cant see them, we CANT see you. When starting off on a hill, if we roll back youve just become a BEER CAN! Were trained to not roll back but it can and does happen. How many of you that drive a manual transmission never rolled back a little when starting off on a hill?? Try it with 20 TONS pulling you backwards!!
That BIG SPACE you see in front of us between us and the next car is NOT FOR YOU TO FILL IN!! its that FOOTBALL FIELD we need to stop so you DONT BECOME A BEER CAN!!!
When you see two trucks taking up both lanes as one is SLOWLY passing another, be patient. One truck is governed at 62 and the other at 63 or one is hauling more weight than the other. It might not seem like much to you but WE MAKE OUR LIVING BY THE MILE bringing YOU your products. On a 2500 mile trip, YES that ONE mile an hour makes a difference and helps us provide for OUR families a little better.
We drive long hours and long miles to deliver EVERYTHING youll ever buy. Many of us LIVE in these trucks for months on end and dont see OUR families for that time. PLEASE!! Try to have a little respect, a little patience and most of all, SAVE YOURSELVES FROM BECOMING A BEER CAN!!
You get to go home every night. If it takes a few minutes longer than youd like, try to remember the driver of that BIG RIG probably hasnt seen their family for days, weeks or months!
Pay attention out there and stay alive when you drive!! We REALLY dont want you to BECOME A BEER CAN!!
A note to 4 wheelers

no problem with your post. i like it actually....rather entertaining. however, if you're in a truck governed at 63 and passing another truck at 62....why the F are you even considering passing that truck with traffic all around you? I see that all the time, there will be a row of traffic in the fast lane, and another truck who is running 2 ft off the trailer in front of them whips out, cutting off another 4 wheeler, only to take the next 50 miles to make the pass.....or they will hit a hill, and slow down, then whip it back over. the whole 'being patient' goes both ways.
and you're delivering those same products YOU use as well....not just 4-wheelers buying those said products.....you're buying them as well.
and being on a hill, and rolling backwards....you have no truck control to keep from rolling backwards? i can do it....and i'm a swift driver. unless you're one of these super truckers who signed legal paperwork pledging to never turn down your talkback, always use your roger beep, promice to buy $50,000 in chrome......just for your CB, and promice never to use your clutch.x#1 and stlcardsfn Thank this. -
My rule is that if a vehicle catches up to me he must be going faster than I am and I slow down, or do not accelerate when it is safe for them to pass.
People on motor bikes that roar down the straight stretches and them slow down way to far in the corners, do not seem to understand that if they have a problem they will become a beer can.
To the little maggots that pull in front and slam on their brakes, are you sure I will slow down or will I push you till you are a beer can?
When there is gravel on the road and you pass stay in the opposing lane until you are well clear then you will not break my lights and windshield.
If you are driving along and there are vehicles behind you pull out of the way and let them go.
Do not stop in the middle of the road to take a picture, or park on both sides with you doors open.
Bicycle riders if the road says no bicycles there is probably a reason.
Just a thought!annettecj Thanks this. -
Dear John,
I cant help but thinkin. a milk crate on the floor next to your seat filled with molotov ####ails would solve most of your problems bud. Try it out!
For mine, I prefer a mixture of 25% diesel, 5% engine oil, 15%ground bar soap, 40%gasoline, 10% styrophome peanuts, and the other 5% a mixture of blue food coloring, pepper, and aspen cologne. -
No way! Thats exactly what I do! Every time I see a vehicle coming at me super fast if they are in the same lane as me, is to take my foot off the gas pedal and run my jake break. Its great fun especially when the hammer lane is packed.
I just met you and I already like you. Just curious, do you like playing with explosives by chance? -
Who said I pass with Traffic all around? I might start that pass with no one in sight but a car doing 75 when I'm doing 65 catches up rather quickly...no? Perhaps you're just upset that a Swift truck can't pass anyone?
Yep, I use those products too (when I can afford to...lol). I wasn't singling out 4 wheelers.
I don't roll back but I see it happen out there. Sorry if my trying to educate the public of the danger of getting too close offends you somehow. Glad you have all those warning devices to help you not do it. Sounds like you may need them.
Perhaps we can't all be as perfect as you "Swift drivers". But at least I've made an attempt to help educate the "general public" about being around big trucks on the road. What "exactly" (other than run around this forum picking folks apart), have YOU done??
The whole point of this was to try and help folks who don't know what we do about big trucks be a little safer out there. You've added to that effort quite nicely. Thanks!
theweaselswench and BNR32 Thank this. -
I for one have to say thank you for the post. I wish all 4 wheelers would read it. I especially liked the beer can part. That was a good throw in! Good job on the post and trying to knock a little sense into people that have no clue what it really takes out here. Also, a thank you for letting them know that we make a huge sacrifice out here in being away from our families

Well Dick. I must tell you that you continue to contradict yourself. Do I have to refresh your memory?
