its called floating, and if done right its better for the transmission then double clutching.
-
I just saw an Eaton Fuller video that said the exact opposite......lol. Now I don't know what to think.
-
well then i guess i have been doing it all wrong for the last 13 years.
dang i hate when im wrong.LOL
-
Yes, and now you know that..............lol
With my straight truck I was only trained how to float. I sill don't have the double clutch down...to hard to upshift.
Does DOT care either way when you go to test for a Class A? -
from what i hear you have to be able to double clutch,at least thats the way it is here.
Dont know why to me its a preference thing not a for safety, TMO -
Floating is: no Clutch
Double Clutching : is ( CLUTCH in gear ) *Clutch Out of Gear
My opinion only, I FLOAT shift.... And in my eyes am saving my clutch lifetime.
All the best, My 2 Cents,

Here's my 2¢. If you've been driving long enough you get to know the truck and what gear it needs to be in at any given speed. So you float the clutch because it's easy and you don't use the clutch so the the wear and tear is reduced. However, there are some that think floating makes you a better truck driver and I think that's bunk. The clutch is there for a reason and using it for each shift does not show you're inexperience it only shows your preference. Here's the problem I see with floating. A new driver (or some old)wants to float and once in awhile he will BANG a gear. I think that causes more damage than getting a few extra miles out of a clutch. The clutch is alot cheaper to fix than a busted tooth off one of the gears and the damage it will cause. So I think every driver should master double clutching before he/she even thinks about floating. And another problem with the clutch that some don't know. You don't need to put the pedal all the way to the floor for it to work. If you do that and the truck is rolling you'll bust out the clutch brake and you grind the gear at a stop trying to get it into the slot. At a stop you can push the clutch to the floor and select a gear without any grinding. If it does grind someone has blown the clutch brake.

Thats odd, I drove a fuller autoshift and all it does is float the gears for you!!!! -
I miss the days when the clutch brake was controlled by a button you mounted on the lever. I think we need to go back to that.
