Can you turn an out of adjustment air brake into a brake that's in compliance?

Yup. Of course, once you've done that, you'll need to get the cam replaced soon, since all cams are automatic adjusters now, and an out of adjustment one means it is probably faulty. But, yes, it allows you to adjust them manually.

Also it is in the "Canadian Truckers Forum". :biggrin_25525:

You can adjust a manual slack adjuster. Auto slack adjusters are not allowed to be worked on unless you are a mechanic, basically.

Do yourself a favor here. Don't adjust your own brakes.
An auto slack adjuster that's out is most likely defective(usually the problem is with the gearing inside or the foundation brake itself.) You'll drive down the road, apply the brake a few times and then it's out of adjustment again.

Flying Finn is right.........the MTO won't allow you to work on your brake at the scale, you call a mechanic and they must sign off on the adjustment.

As for manual brake adjusters, there are different sizes with different stroke length and unless you know the size of the brake chamber you can get the push rod stroke length wrong.

Cover your ###. Brakes are the number one level 1 inspection O.O.S violation.

I'm not sure about Canada, but I would imagine it's the same as the US, and manual slack adjusters are not allowed. All slack adjusters must be automatic.

No. There are still units in service that have manual slack adjusters.
All brake systems as of 1996 must have automatic slack adjusters. Anything before 1996 is considered serviceable and doesn't require the unit to be retrofitted.
There are still many trailers in service without them. Many companies use these trailers for storing and transporting dunnage. Manual slack adjusters will still be around for a while.
