I'm in my first week of school, and this subject came up. One instructor said, "...As a dispatcher, I don't care about how you get the load there. Sideways, up-side down, back-wards, as long as it gets there safely and on time..." Later that day, another instructor was addressing wx concerns, and went on to say how important communications between dispatcher and drivers are. It wasn't until later that I thought about how different those views seemed to be. So... "No news is good news"?....or, "when in doubt, give a shout!" What say you, seasoned vets?

Some of both. Under normal situations you won't have to contact your dispacther unless its company policy, which some companies have. If you have an emergency on the road ( ie breakdown, accident, road closure, and such) then call.

If you go to a large company, probably all you are to your dispatcher is a blip on his computer monitor. You'll send load information over the Qualcomm and most other communication. When I was at the large companies, I rarely talked to my dispatcher on the phone. You do need to communicate when you're running out of hours and when you want to get home but that can also be done over the Qualcomm.
